Debussy & Ravel's Great SQ's done to make your heart sing!
Maybe I should throw my old Quatuor Ysaye CD from ca, 1990 away? It now seems boring and cold compared to this waonderful 'Cpress SQ' recording. If this is the 2002 recording re-released they were wise to do so. It is fabulously rich, vibrant and from my own score-reading accurate without the least incursion of corupption of tempo so common in groups that want to milk the climaxes. It sizzples and swings without sacrifising nuance, and frankly the combination of their total unity as an ensemble, great players, great instruments and an obviously great recording venue, put together with modern technology makes for a super recording, far surpassing older items in the market. I have not actually heard them until I realized on some of my Amazon downloads of modern composers I was listening to them. When I finally bought one of their CDs and then downloaded these mp3's from CDbaby I was hooked. And it is great to think they have launched this independently of the major music corporations that are so corrupt these days, I prefer not to buy their products. They would have messed it up for sure but thanks to a group that is produced by the artists' themselves we can get great art, and great sound at a price we know is going to enrich these artists lives and their work. And who knows do justice to so many great composers who never really have been represented fairly by the establishment. Debussy, despite his fame is one of mine.
IF they were this good back in 2002 just how much better can they be today. I am not waiting, I will be downloading their latest material; sadly I only lament that I do not live in California where i would run, not walk to there next gig. These guys and gals are the "Fab 4 of chamber music groups." The energy they display and unity of purpose is that magnetic. For me they are a supergroup. And believe me I have parted company with so much of commercial music today. Let's hope they keep their purity of musical intention going forward.
I wish them personal health and prosperity; I would hate to see this line-up change due to any outside factors!!
Go Cypress S.Q. you are one fine bunch of musicians!
sincerely, michael guy, pianist/composer
