Album Notes

The debut disc by Detroit's Sounds of the Czars. The band plays a brand of rock and roll that has been described as "power lounge." While some purists have done fine recreating the smooth and jazzy exotica that has reasserted itself upon the pop consciousness in recent years, and others have taken snippets of groovier times and sampled them to create interesting dance music, Sounds of the Czars uses its that same jazzy exotica to play guitar based rock and roll. You'll hear mambo, theremin, surf and bassa nova. You'll hear stories of leopard skin bikinis, secret olive trees for that perfect martini, the man who tamed the 50 Foot Woman and another whose Hollywood role model is Blue Velvet's Frank Booth. This is world music for hipsters who collect memories of tiki lamps, beat poetry and instrumental b-sides. "When you listen to Sounds of the Czars," as "Theme from an Awkward Kiss" boldly announces, "you become a citizen in a world of sound."

We are now citizen in a world...of Sound! Very good music with a sense of humor. In the week since we got this CD, we have listened to it at least a dozen times. This band has created a genre all its own, and I hope we hear more from them in the future.

These guys are great. I saw them at a Shag art exhibit in Detroit a few years ago and they played the perfect music. Mysterious,fez-wearing,lounge music, Detroit Style. 110 Proof.
