Damaru.....tre koo!
author: Russ W
Intense drumming! I wanted the beats to keep going. Drop the flute and dijeredoo, and focus marimba's and more drums.
I'd like to see Damaru on tour in Canada perhaps.

DAMARU is world beat at its best....
author: D. C. Donovan, Editor
Gentle flute opens a mild collection of poly rhythms that grows on the listener of DAMARU. To call Damaru 'African' alone is unfair: DAMARU is world beat at its best, and while heavily influenced by African sound, it blends in plenty of surprising world influences, from Middle East to jazz, dance, and vocals. When you view the lineup of the seven members, it's easy to see where the polyrhythms are so strong: djembe, dumbeck, congas, and kalimba supplement flute, guitar, vocals and sax. Some surprising folk influences creep in too, as in 'Little Lisa Jane', or the riffs which weave in and out of 'Fanga', for example.
Despite the heavy percussion influence here, it's to their credit that Damaru doesn't let the beat overwhelm and dominate: 'Fanga' features a beautiful flute throughout, and even the more dominant drums on 'Big Anaconda' allow sax to shine and a jazzier influence to permeate. Too bad you can't see the group's dancer Desiree: it's obvious a DVD is needed for visual reinforcement here!
