Album Notes

the dambrots "love, delusion and other things...," (the orange album)

With "love, delusion and other things...", the dambrots prove that they have as honest a take on subjects of the head and heart as any band out right now. There's a real truthfulness to their treatment of the title subjects, as each song touches on the complexity of relationships and the bittersweet aspects of life, love and memory. Musically and lyrically they're hopeful even when they're down, and wistful and melancholy even when they're upbeat.

Their third album is the acoustic duo's warmest effort to date - "song" is positively uplifting - as well as their most complex. Incorporating a diversity of musical moods, textures and instrumentation, the album features dawn marie on drums and an assortment of percussion instruments, and al james plays acoustic guitars, bass, piano, even mandolin and ukulele. The piano on "and I dreamed I saw it on route 46" is lovely, and dawn marie's voice has never sounded better.

"love, delusion and other things..." finds the dambrots expanding musically while retaining their signature wistful, haunting sound. The album moves from the choppy and angular country folk of "the stairs" to the indie folk sound of "soup moment" and "this time tomorrow." Slower, dreamier songs like "a while" and "a bag of emptiness" are woven throughout the record.

The last song, "walk down any avenue" is an old-timey duet whose sincere, playful romanticism is reminiscent of Mo Tucker's turn on "After Hours" from The Velvet Underground. It serves as a perfect coda for an album that captures the power and the beauty of love, while recognizing its inherent fleetingness and the sadness that accompanies its loss.

Delightful and tuneful. I fell in love with "tracy wants to know" in under 2 minutes, from hearing the first chord! Nice singing & playing on this album - wide range of instrumentation too... I'll definitely be spinning some of the tracks in the coming weeks/months.

A great listen

dawn marie and al james have a good thing going with their mass production music house of a band called the dambrots. So far, they've released 3 discs, all with the same art, all different colors on their quest to release 8 discs, 1 for each color in the dambrots logo. On this, their third release "love, delusion…" they show off their art, a sort of acoustic simplicity that comes with built in harmonies and stripped down melodies. Haunting at times they can easily turn up the pace and arrange a pop sound . The long and short of it… a great listen, nicely packaged and enjoyable."

Third in a color coded series of eight, love, delusion, and other things...shows a creative evolution of songwriting, instrumentation, and talent. Reminiscent of the folk duo's of yesteryear, the twelve tracks on this CD show a range of diverse and refreshing styles. The production quality of this CD is excellent with crystal clear vocals and harm instrumentation. For those of you who miss real musicians, this one is for you!

Like the Beatles "White Album", a simple cover can have so much more meaning. the dambrots' album covers are plain to the eye, but their vibrant colors express their pleasant sound. the dambrots use vicious lyrics encrypted in beautiful, harmonious vocals, that could lull you to dream and make you weep dry. Complexly structured rhythms disguised as simple are the perfect accompaniment to this new and upcoming Folk/Pop duo. Nice on the ears, nice on the soul.
