Review of Damian Erskine by Ernie Leblanc It was a bright summer’s day in July 2002. I was seeking to relieve some lunch-time hunger pangs when some of the most incredible sonic events I’ve ever heard derailed my intentions. These spectacular sounds drove me to discover the source: Is it piped? It’s Gotta Be! Nobody can play like that by just winging it on a street corner...can they??? Oh my God! It not piped – it’s live! The crowd milled by me as I hurried to catch the fluid waves of stunning artistic genius happening in the round on the corner of Washington and Summer streets in Boston, MA. There, before my eyes and ears a young man sat upon a bass amp while playing a six-string bass. He blazed away with skillful certainty and mind-blowing control that any bassist would eagerly envy. What made it all so unbelievable was his ability to perfectly create and execute note-filled phrases that only a musician’s musician could pull off. His articulations where then, as there are now, completely brilliant! I didn’t want to leave; just hang there and try to learn something. I didn’t want to be a rude pest by discourteously interrupting what anyone would immediately recognize as pure genius at work. But, I also could not just walk away from him without paying my respects and compliments to him. Who is this guy? He eventually paused and one of us broke the ice. We spoke briefly and I learned that in addition to being a great bassist, he was a really nice guy (rare combination). I asked for and received an impressive business card with a photo of him playing just as he was doing on the corner. I had no idea, but would never forget that I had just happened upon more that a musician’s musician; I had just met Damian Erskine – A Bassist’s Bassist! A few years later, while surfing the web site of the extraordinary bassist Lucas Pickford, I found Damian's web link, contacted him and have had the good fortune of corresponding with him since. His great recorded works are now a big part of my CD collection and having ready access to Damian's skillful mastery of the electric bass is serving me well both as a source of enjoyable listening as well as musical inspiration to such an extent that I hope to present to him soon my deepest thanks in the form of a song that he inspired.
