Heat On the Track

by Dana Gillian

Dana Gillian’s versatility shines in this album as she experiments with vintage styles and sounds. “Heat on the Track” is a timepiece of old country performed in a modern way. Heat On the Track is a stamp in time, a 1960s walk down Broadway through downtown Nashville, vignettes of Honky Tonks and old riffs from Printers Alley aches in the melodies. This self produced album is a perfect blend of Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and the Mavericks. Gillian uses Cash’s rhythm, Cline’s voice and the Maverick’s Tex Mex sound to give us dynamic songs. Her writing styles, hot players, and vintage instruments, pull off old riffs and vignettes of country from the 1960’s. “Heat on the Track”, is the story the first female NASCAR driver, Janet Guthrie, as she burns the famous Bristol track. With it’s lyrics and Cash style rhythm, racing fans will sing along before and after the flag is dropped. Lonesome is breath taking as Gillian smoothly sings with emotion of Cline. This album has it all so step back on the streets of early Nashville, tip your hat and enjoy.

Dana Seals Gillian is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist. She began playing guitar in high school after her father gave her Taylor guitar and a copy of Bobbie Gentry’s, "Ode to Billie Joe". Dana then began writing music and by the end of her first year in college she had recorded and self produced several projects. She would often set aside her acoustic guitar for a Fender Mustang and she’s played in many bands being one of the few female “frontmans”. She has traveled with her indie rock band, Dana and the Robots, all over the southeast. A lot like Gillian Welch, Dana started in her teens and twenties in punk bands and indie rock bands. She continually put aside the acoustic guitar and picked up the electric Fender Mustang. Her style is soulful hints of Motown and deep old country western tones with the dark musical style of her culture in Appalachia.
Dana is deeply rooted in her Appalachia culture, her studies of visual art at Penland School of Folk Art has added to her art form. One of her passions is to write music that tells a story for people without a voice.
Most recently, spring 2013, Dana and the Robots( Dana’s College Indie Rock Band) have produced and released their Anniversary Album, “Big Sharp Rock”, celebrating 10years of writing and playing together. Dana has worked with many nonprofit organizations and frequently develops lyrics about human rights. In 2013, she recorded and released, “Dana Gillian and the Carter County Jail Sessions“, which was composed to aid women serving in jail. Dana spent several weeks visiting with the women in the Carter County Jail inspiring them by teaching songwriting skills and the empowerment of writing in general. Her style is soulful hints of Motown and deep old country western tones with the dark musical style of her culture in Appalachia.
