28-year-old pianist Dan Cray, a finalist at the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competion and the 2004 Cole Porter Fellowship Competition of the American Pianist Association,is already being hailed as "a key figure when it comes to escorting jazz into the new millennium." Since graduating in 1999 from Northwestern University with degrees in Jazz Studies and European History, Dan has been in demand as a pianist and bandleader. While living in Chicago, he has performed at galas for Governor Edgar, Governor Ryan, and Mayor Richard Daley, and plays regularly at the city's premier jazz clubs and corporate events. He currently leads a trio featuring bassist Clark Sommers and drummer Greg Wyser-Pratte. Dan has also performed with a number of other established jazz musicians and ensembles, including Orbert Davis, Eric Schneider, George Fludas, Kimberly Gordon, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Dan studied at Northwestern with Donald Isaak and Michael Kocour, and has also studied privately with Danilo Perez and Dick Hyman. He has released two albums with his trio, Who Cares (2001) and No One (2003), and can also be heard on Chicago trumpeter David Young's 2001 release Appassionata and vocalist Marc Johnson's 2005 release Mark Johnson and the Dan Cray Trio.

No One is for Everyone who loves great jazz
author: Erin McDougaldThe Dan Cray trio is one of the tightest cutting edge jazz combos in Chicago--this CD is an excellent example of their musicianship, their collaborative creativity and their mastery of improvisation. The sequence of songs are impeccably laid out in a way that becomes more inviting and interesting with each track--almost a musical monologue. I've had the pleasure of singing with each musician (Clark Sommers, Greg Wyser-Pratte and Dan Cray) outside of their trio and the pleasure of hearing them as a group: They are solid individual jazz musicians who add tremendous integrity to any group and solid in their unity as their own group! It is my sincere opinion that if you buy this CD, you will seek out their next live performance--whatever city that might be! "No One" offers beautiful versions of some of the best American standards (check out the re-harmonized version of "The Lady Is a Tramp"!)as well as charming and haunting original tunes written by both Dan Cray and Clark Sommers. I love this CD--you will too--it deserves your attention and your money! "No One" is a treat for EVERYONE who hears it and anyone who appreciates great jazz!
One of best trios I've heard in last year
author: MichaelI heard one selection on the radio and took a chance and I made the right choice. This trio sounds like good jazz should. No distractions of weird experimental stuff. I don't know the terms to review music but the CD hasn't left my CD player yet! If your like trios with a classic sound and an upbeat twist, you won't be disappointed.
