Album Notes

28-year-old pianist Dan Cray, a finalist at the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competion and the 2004 Cole Porter Fellowship Competition of the American Pianist Association,is already being hailed as "a key figure when it comes to escorting jazz into the new millennium." Since graduating in 1999 from Northwestern University with degrees in Jazz Studies and European History, Dan has been in demand as a pianist and bandleader. While living in Chicago, he has performed at galas for Governor Edgar, Governor Ryan, and Mayor Richard Daley, and plays regularly at the city's premier jazz clubs and corporate events. He currently leads a trio featuring bassist Clark Sommers and drummer Greg Wyser-Pratte. Dan has also performed with a number of other established jazz musicians and ensembles, including Orbert Davis, Eric Schneider, George Fludas, Kimberly Gordon, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Dan studied at Northwestern with Donald Isaak and Michael Kocour, and has also studied privately with Danilo Perez and Dick Hyman. He has released two previous albums with his trio, Who Cares (2001) and No One (2003), and can also be heard on Chicago trumpeter David Young's 2001 release Appassionata, vocalist Marc Johnson's 2005 release Mark Johnson and the Dan Cray Trio, and saxophonist John Goldman's 2005 release "In Walked Pierre."

Dan Cray, Clark Sommers and Greg Wyser-Pratte are the kind of musicians that make New Yorkers want to visit Chicago and take note. They are buried treasures beginning to surface and it is very exciting to watch. This latest album, SAVE US, is a testimony to their synnergetic unity and collective-imagination! Check out When You Wish Upon a Star: I cannot tell if I'm creeped out by the haunting delivery of Dan's implosive reharmonizations or if I'm just plain hypmotized by the beauty that results from it. Just One of Those Things is another example of taking a tune 70 years old and making it perfectly vibrant-- that is the VERSE he is playing in the beginning of the song!!! --A long way from what Sinatra crooned and far more tempestuous in it's pace and tone! Amazing. The Dan Cray Trio performs weekly with me in Chicago; I am a jazz vocalist and currently in the process of recording my third album which features this brilliant trio. Our album is entitled MEETING PLACE and will be available on CDBABY soon. I hope you buy SAVE US and when you fall in love with it (and you will), please check out MEETING PLACE as well. They each have really tastey solos you'll eat up. Save UP and buy a copy of SAVE US for everyone on your holiday list!!!!!
