The first recording of the chamber and solo works of Daniel Hewson under the composer's supervision: including his award winning string quartet, piano quintet, cello/piano duet and solo piano works. Featuring Daniel on piano, Helen Neilson (cello); James Widden (viola); George Hlawiczka (violin) and Suzy Quirke (violin)
Daniel Hewson learnt piano at an early age and composed his first orchestral piece when he was ten. He won the top music scholarship to Cranleigh School and later joined the National Youth Orchestra as a trombonist. He won the Osgood Composition Prize for a String Quartet that was premiered by the Allegri Quartet. Daniel studied piano with Alan Gravill and composition with Peter Dickinson, George Benjamin and Robert Sherlaw-Johnson. After completing a music degree at Oxford he co-founded dance act The Beat Foundation, wrote for the Art of Noise and arranged strings for Madonna and Groove Armada. Daniel has performed with Nigel Kennedy and Joanna McGregor. He has composed for a variety of settings including big band and his own Jazz quartet.

Exciting new contemporary music
author: Peter Bunce
Having listened to the disc, I found all the pieces truly electrifying. I love the way the music combines elements of jazz with the more 'classical' sound. I particularly enjoyed the different moods that were suggested and rarely did I lose concentration during any the pieces. I look forward to more music from Daniel Hewson and his ensemble!

Most exciting

I have just played Daniels CD and really enjoyed it. The rhythmic drive was most exciting and he had some catchy melodies. I will be interested to follow his career.

Cutting edge contemporary music
author: Richard Carruthers
I saw this album launched at a London concert and was blown away by the music. Driving rhythms punctuate the quartet and quintet which have influences of Bartok and Stravinsky but are resolutely Hewson's voice with beautiful melodic structures. There are Jazz influences in the solo piano pieces and the cello/piano piece breaks entirely new ground with it's lyricism and Brazilian flare. Modern classical music as it should be - challenging yet tuneful. Highly recommended!
