Album Notes

Experimental, fingerstyle guitar music. All pieces performed with no overdubs. Tracks 2,3,7 and 12 use a paintbrush on the body of the guitar.

An instrumental album with a wide dynamic range featuring moving ballads, aggressive tapping, unorthodox guitar techniques and upbeat grooves.

"Canvas & Rhythm" (2001) is John Danley's 3rd national, independent release. John was presented a critic's choice award in The Nashville Scene based on this recording in 2002.

Danley is a regular contributor to National Public Radio, a performing arts entertainer and composer of documentary and independent film music. In March of 1999, Danley developed a style of guitar playing by using a paintbrush to add percussive sounds to the instrument while simutaneously creating harmonies and melodic hooks.

Brushstroke of guitar genius!
author: Laura T. Lynch of Kweevak.com
John is basically a one-man show and producer. He invites talented musicians to play violin, cello and tabla on a few of his songs but the majority are instrumentals performed by solely by John. Danley is a masterful innovative player. He has a unique technique of using a paintbrush across the guitar strings to create a percussive sound. This style can be heard on tracks 2,3,7 and 12. The twelve compositions on this CD reflect a variety of styles such as folk, new age, acoustic, jazz and world. Canvas & Rhythm is a layered, colorful soundscape that is rich in vision. John who favors a Taylor 6 String uses his instrument to create songs with clarity and depth. His music is rich and fluid. Each composition flows smoothly and effortlessly into one other as the moods and styles delicately change. The CD opens with 'El Greco Shuffle' with it's quick fingerpickin’ and a subtle stick beat and guitar taps. It slows down to a softer more reflective tone and than speeds back up to the opening Spanish guitar like chords. 'Atama' is another great track with a world beat intriguing side effects and subtle but stunning guitar work. 'Baba Ganouj' is a funky mix of haunting guitars, a touch of the new age and plenty of chord and mood changes.
