notes

Amber Dispositions represents John Danley's 7th release on his own, Nashville based, A Priori label. This recording introduces a collection of instrumental, fingerstyle, acoustic guitar music. Ambience, rhythm and melodic development remain significant to the conceptual development of this project. The album showcases fifteen original pieces of solo guitar music intended to introduce a fusion of techniques and a stylistic blending of musical genres.

JOHN DANLEY is an experimental, fingerstyle guitarist who composes and performs his own blend of acoustic, instrumental music. John has developed a style of guitar playing by using a housepainter's paintbrush to add percussive sounds to the instrument while simultaneously creating colorful harmonies and distinctive melodic hooks. His exposure includes extensive airplay on syndicated radio stations focusing on folk, new age, acoustic, jazz, blues and world music. John Danley is a regular contributor to National Public Radio's All Things Considered, Public Radio International’s To The Best of Our Knowledge a performing arts entertainer and composer of music for film and television (including TBS soundtracks for cable). He has performed at college universities, festivals, art galleries, workshops and has shared the stage with such artists as David Gray, Iris DeMent, Reese Wynans, Cheryl Wheeler, and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. Recent nominations include The Nashville Scene's "Best Guitar Hero" 2002 and solo guitar album Cemeteries, Missed Trains and Blue Skies and solo guitar song of the year (Hickory), 2004 JPFolks Music Awards. Amber Dispositions represents his 7th solo release.

  • Amber Dispositions

I heard a cut from this CD on one of San Francisco's best public radio programs called Tangents. Every Saturday night, Dorie Stein, the host, plays multicultural, crosscultural, world music. I was mesmerized by the piece and ordered it as soon as possible. I was not disappointed with any of the other cuts. It is simply a fantastic collection that I've listened to everyday since I got it.

John Danley has always had incredible technique, but his compositional skills have improved with each release - and this is the best yet. He plays with precision, with passion - both hot and heartbreaking - and with a musical creativity that's far too rare. And to top it all off, he's a technician as well, pulling the most unexpected, yet entirely appropriate, percussive sounds out of his guitar. After seeing him perform in San Francisco and listening to his CDs, I have a new favorite living guitarist. And as a guitarist myself, I'm not easy to please!

I purchased 3 copies to send as gifts. A great recording!

  • What a nice example of fingerstyle guitar!

How is it possible to get so many notes out of six strings with so few available fingers on either hand. It sound as if at least three busy guitarists are at it at once.

  • Love it! Love it! Love it!

That's all I can say about that! Love it John! You Rock!

  • Danley's 'Amber' will give your soul wings!

John Danley is extraordinary. His latest release AMBER DISPOSITIONS exhibits his vast talents in all genres imaginable. Pieces like 'Elegy for Iris' express a yearning that pulls at your core. Auburn Moon and Ship's Mast are beautiful tunes that will long be remembered...and the powerful Toledo or the complex Gossamer and Grey exhibit such emotional depth, it's hard to believe this is stuff written by a man still in his thirties. A phenomenal CD.

  • Spectacular addition to any guitar afficionado's collection

Eclectic, original, well-performed compositions. I've played this CD during my modeling sessions where the sketch artists were intrigued by John's styles. I've also played this CD for a friend who has been guitarist for years in a band; he was mesmerized by John's talent. John's performance in Larkspur, CA was delightful--be sure to see him if he's performing near you. ~Petaluma, CA
