Album Notes

Raw, intelligent, and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before - such is the musical performance of Dan Mills. Mills started writing and performing in his hometown of Cranston, Rhode Island at the age of sixteen. Performing as an acoustic act, he found a way to connect with audiences on a personal level through his extraordinary stage presence and visual, almost storybook lyrics. Evident in the songs are a wide range of different influences: from Frank Sinatra to Jay-Z, from Paul Simon to Martin Sexton. Mills found a way to take the solo acoustic act to a level that anyone and everyone can enjoy, creating a cult following in his new hometown of Ithaca, New York.

Now at the age of twenty-one, the release of Dan Mills’s debut album "Different Colored Walls" has broken new ground. The album provides a collection of songs that allows listeners to see the many sides of this versatile, capable musician. Fresh tasteful arrangements include bass guitar, drums, keys, and female vocalists to help form a depth and richness to Mills’s music. From start to finish, the album plays much like a live performance, leaving listeners excited to have caught a glimpse of this charismatic, young man’s personality.

You might find "Different Colored Walls" getting stuck in the CD player of your car. With upbeat, pop numbers like "Eight" and "Selling the Farm" alongside personal, thought provoking poetry such as "Odysseus", "Just as Scared", and "My Friend", you’ll find yourself loving the songs as much as the people that Mills creates through words.

Dan Mills writes music that is approachable by almost anyone. His lyrics are as timeless as they are moving. As you listen to the album, you might see yourself in his songs. Dan Mills and "Different Colored Walls" create a world in which you just might feel at home.

I totally get these songs stuck in my head. He's in my SLEEP playlist on my Ipod, I listen to him every night before I go to bed. Everyone told him he'd be a star, and I hope he goes even further. The two minute samples of each song do the album no justice. It is not until you hear the song in it's entirety that you can really get the full beauty and oddity of Dan Mills' amazingly heart- felt music. He captures stories brilliantly and has a down to earth empathy for anything and anyone in his lyrics. Dan Mills is amazingly talented and witty. Track 10, "Susanne" is so perfect you will get the chills just listening to it.
