notes

Once a generation, maybe twice if you're lucky, a new artist comes along with a sound so powerful, music so profound, that it actually reshapes the way you think about the world. Dan Neal is not that artist. But we strongly recommend you give him a good listen anyway. He's got stories aplenty to tell through his songs, and his personal story is as interesting as the tunes themselves. Dan and his producer, Gary White, wrote their first regional hit at the age of 16. Fast forward to the present and Dan is emerging with an impressive solo debut. Backed by the Lucinda Williams band and with cameos from some of LA's hottest session players, Dan's songwriting sparkles with originality, sounding good on first listening and better after that. From the moving title cut, "When The Big Picture Fades", to the irreverant songs "Koi Pond" and "Lower Your Standards" (among others), he displays the rare ability to discuss poignantly the meaning of life, on one hand, and the humor revealed when man's baser instincts surface. The full range of human emotion receives artful, innovative treatment in this impressive CD. Solid from start to finish with nary a cluncker in the 12-song grab bag, this CD is guaranteed to appeal to savy listeners from just about anywhere.

  • Great Release

The best CDs, like this one, grow on you and reveal more with each listenin. The lyrics catch your attention, discretely exposing the humor, hurt, and anger - makes me think of Richard Thompson in that regard. The band is right there, evertime.
