Album Notes

Dan Steven is a singer/songwriter from London, Ontario but he previously lived in Chatham and Peterborough, Ontario as well as in Michigan and Indiana.

He has busked on the streets of Chatham, London, Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver, and San Francisco.

Dan has played his guitar at the edge of the Grand Canyon, on the sands of Lake Erie, beneath the stars of El Pismo, CA, and on piers overlooking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. When he wasn't writing music, Dan was working at street missions in Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto.

Dan's experiences as a street musician fuel a driving creative force, influenced by his deep faith in Jesus Christ, his search for a spiritual self, social justice, drama, friends and family, Shakespeare, van Gogh, sunflowers, poetry, Star Wars, Tim Horton's coffees, the Blackhawks, loves (and loves lost), and the chorale at Trent University.

Dan's lyrics expose his skill and passion for crafting musical messages for the listener. Thoughtful and honest observations of daily living and the struggles of people to find peace bring an immediate connection between Dan and his audience.

His songs blend wit, spirituality, and funky folk-rock, prompting an apt description of Dan as "the wacky singer/prophet from London".

Whether it's heard at a campfire, a coffee house, in a club, or on the street, Dan's music touches people.

Live performances move easily from sharing laughs with the audience to expressing the most intimate hopes and fears, and this transparency makes the music real. Finding the right producer, Dan has taken the artistic leap into the recording studio.

The resulting magic has created the release of a sparkling debut CD from the new Canadian alternative recording artist, Dan Steven.

I bought this off the strength of a single track sample "Tear For Civilization." There is a honest yet quirky view of the world in Dan's music, definitely a gem.

Musically compelling and lyrically powerful debut CD
author: Chrisian Courier, Brian Walsh Reviewer

Dan Steven’s debut CD, Beggars and Kings, is an immediately arresting, captivating and inviting piece of work. On the opening cut, “Heaven Hear Me,” Steven serves notice that this album will be musically compelling and lyrically powerful. I found myself immediately on my feet wanting to dance to the music, yet also leaning close to the stereo trying to catch every word. And on first listening it became clear that this was a remarkable CD by a young man with a wisdom considerably beyond his years. Here is a Christian artist who engages his world deeply, has the kind of perception that characterizes good songwriting, and somehow finds a way to write powerful, evocative and poignant lyrics with a sense of humour. This album is a brightly burning torch from a remarkable young singer/songwriter supported by a wonderfully talented cast of musicians and a seasoned producer. Keep your ears open for Dan Steven and don’t miss an opportunity to hear him live.
