ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Critics have called New York City-based pianist/composer Dan Tepfer "brilliant" (the Boston Globe), "one of tomorrow's jazz stars" (Eugene Weekly) and "certainly among those clearly willing to play with familiar formulas and take new approaches, even as he incorporates strokes from the masters" (Jazzreview.com). His eclectic sound, which one French reviewer called "a resolutely fresh approach to the piano, somewhere between classical music and jazz" (La Terrace), reflects the diverse path that led him to a career in jazz.

Featuring Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Richie Barshay (whom Tepfer shares with fellow pianist Herbie Hancock), the trio is Tepfer’s main working ensemble. Today, after more than two years of touring and performing through France, Japan, Peru and the USA, the group is reaching that rare sense of mutual understanding that comes only through extended experience, prompting one reviewer for BostonLive.net to write: “[The trio] has it all together with the kind of trust and adventure in the air that solidifies a great jazz performance." The group’s debut CD, Before the Storm, was named by Cadence Magazine as one of the ten best albums of 2005.

We saw Dan Tepfer play at the Bostonian Millenium in August and immediately sent away for this CD to relive the great style of jazz piano we enjoyed that evening. We were not disappointed. Great album.

Great music
This trio is only composed by young artists, but when you listen their music, you really feel the maturity and the comprehension of the jazz music. The piano is beautiful, very intelligent and sensitive, the bass and the drums are playing in the same way ! I really recommand this CD

Fabulous CD. It doesn't get better
I had an opportunity to see the trio in Cambridge at the Zeitgeist Gallery. It was a great performance. Dan's sensitivity and artistry are a wonder to watch and hear. The first two numbers on his CD, A MINOR AMBITION and VAGALAME are destined to become classics and are my favorites. And Jorge and Richie are awesome. I'm looking forward to more.

Bill Beuttler, Boston Globe

Brilliant... an impressive self-produced CD
The brilliant young pianist Dan Tepfer doesn't consider having a degree in astrophysics all that unusual[...] He also recently released an impressive self-produced CD, "Before the Storm," that mixes four studio pieces with three tunes recorded live.

Brett Campbell, Eugene Weekly, Oregon

One of tomorrow's jazz stars...
Tepfer, who has been winning plaudits and prizes around Europe, is a fan of the late, great Steve Lacy, and his originals and covers combine Lacy's exploratory esthetic and a lyricism that will make this show also appeal to fans of Hersch or Brad Mehldau. This is a chance to catch one of tomorrow's jazz stars in an ideal setting.

Great start for an uprising trio!
First of all, thanks. This CD here is a great opportunity I've had to listen to what's happening with younger jazz artists. DT leads this trio with originality, flexibility, and occasionally "a bunch of that stuff that makes you want to move your head up and down...".
I really recommend this album. If you're an instrumentalist I assure you this album will send you more playing urges. It's fun to listen to it's new, it's got great ideas varying from diverse styles (nice job richie!).
My favorite track is definitely "7 for 5", although I also vividly recommend the live version of Giant Steps...

Nice job guys, please try to stop by Lyon sometimes ;)

A great CD. What an artist!
We really enjoyed the CD. Dick's brother, who is Danny's grandfather also played jazz. Danny's music is more like a classical jazz. What a thrill for his Uncle Dick and myself. Please let us know if there are any more
CDs.
