Dan Zanes, acclaimed singer/songwriter and former lead singer of Boston rock and roll band The Del Fuegos has started a label dedicated to making children's music for the whole family and neighborhood to enjoy.

It's the sound of friends getting together and making relaxed and exciting music in a communal atmosphere.

On Rocket Ship Beach, the first release from Dan's Festival Five label, the friends include Sheryl Crow, Donald Saaf, rapper Rankin' Don, Suzanne Vega, West indian vocal group The Sandy Girls and Barbara Brousal in addition to Zanes own Wonderland String Band.

    Another great CD; we have 4 others. The guests each bring a new element to this collection of songs. Who doesn't love Father Goose? We just travelled down the Erie canal so we love that song in particular. Hello makes me smile. Can't wait to see the man himself in concert again. We are groupies.

    We love this CD. On a recent family road trip we listened almost continuously for 3 hours (each way)! I think our favorites are Father Goose and Hello but enjoy each and every song on the CD. Great job producing a fun, family friendly CD.

    This CD is awesome...my 3-1/2 year old loves the songs -- and so does his Mommy and Papa and 1-1/2 year old sister! The CD is put together so well -- the guest artists are awesome (Hello! Sheryl Crow!! Love her!!). We bought this CD because Go Down Emmanuel Road was on it -- however, all the songs are great -- but my personal favorite on this album is the one with Father Goose with his added flavor to classic nursery rhymes. My son takes takes his microphone and pretends he is Father Goose -- rapping like a little star! Thanks, Dan and your amazing group of talented musicians for making music the entire family TRULY enjoys. Your music is inspiring and it's cultivating my son's love of music -- and that makes this Mommy happier than I can ever describe. (PS My son really won't get his hair cut until after we see you this September '06 in Pittsburg -- we are driving over 2 hours from Cleveland to go. He wants to go to the concert with "Dan Zanes" hair. So look for the little boy in the audience with crazy hair!)

    Another fun, funky album from Dan Zanes. My little girl loves Father Goose and I adore the song "Goodbye Old Paint". Dan seems to get together songs that are infinitely playable and amusing. I love it and am off to buy another one!

    This cd quite simply changed my life. It helped make it okay to be a mom, not to be young and wild anymore, and it gave my daughter and I music that we both love. Dan Zanes is an inspiration to me, although this is my very favorite CD, each new project of his gives us more to be happy about. He also includes the chords and lyrics where he legally can (on his website in the case of this CD) because he wants you to play this stuff yourself. And we do!

    We got Rocket Ship beach as a gift. My daughter loves it, and now we are giving it as a gift to all of our friends. We got Family Dance and Night Time too. You should see our 15 month old dance around the room. She loves them all! Rocket Ship is great to sing along with in the car too.

    Since seeing Dan's videos on Noggin, my daughter (16 mo.) has become a big Dan fan. This is the second of his CDs wev've purchased and we like even better. From Polly Wolly Doodle with Sheryl Crow, Erie canal with Suzanne Vega this CD continues to surprise me. One of my favorite Sinatra song is done in a whole new way. The one song we like the most is Father Goose, the reggae vibe is awesome.

    Put this on during those rough afternoon hours and I guarantee you'll have smiles and giggles in no time. My 3 year old and 2 year old just love it. The minute they hear it come on they can't help but start dancing (and Mommy can't help but join in too!)

    My one-year old daughter and I LOVE this CD! The music is singable, danceable, and makes us both happy during that "difficult" hour of the late afternoon when nothing else works. I love the song choices--they are rootsy, so very singable and not at all sentimental or sappy. ditto dz himself and all of the wonderful guest artists. Now we are "saving up" to buy the rest of the DZ "catalog". Great stuff!

    After our nightly bath, our 21-month-old boys run naked into the bedroom yelling ki-mo-kee-mo (!!!) - a request for the second song on the CD - King Kong Kitchie.     My daughter's favorite songs on this cd is Erie Canal and the Weather Report. She cracks up with the conversations...all you really need is a jean jacket... We would drive at times alongside the erie canal on our many trips to canada and we stopped one time, Suzanne Vega's gorgeous voice in our heads and i was imagining the mule named Sal. My daughter thought the Erie Canal was one of the greatest visits in the world. (she is 6) the lawns behind the small houses along the erie canal were so lush and green, we wished we could have had a picnic with popsicals. thank you for this wonderful cd and the beautiful stories and songs.

    My 18 month old son Alex is completely nuts about this cd. He loves all the Dan Zanes cd's, but this one is his favorite. So much so, that wear and tear dictated that we had to get another copy, thus this purchase! It's so refreshing to able to listen to music with my child and not feel like, "When can I take this off?!" My wife and I can dance with my son and we all have a great time. Plus, we keep all of these songs alive for another generation to enjoy! I find myself wanting to listen to this cd when my son isn't even around. A fantastic cd for everybody!

    Dan Zanes has such a sincere, happy approach to music. Father Goose is a trip! The Sandy Girls bring the joy of the tropics to my house here in Montana. Listen for the SWEET banjo and tuba and guitar that starts "Bushel And A Peck," and enjoy the most amazing version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" with banjo, clarinet (haunting!) and guitar. Sing along and smile.

    Well, as I was saying, if Paul Westerberg did a children's album, this would pretty much be it. It's got the same feel as Westerberg's solo albums, very home spun and genuine. Very acoustic, but catchy. Same for all 3 of Zane's cd's, but this one is the best. My son got it for his 3rd b-day party and all our friends were rocking out to it in the back yard with all the monkeys running around. That's the appropriate atmosphere in which to play Rocket Ship Beach. Also great traveling music.

    I got this cd when my baby was only a few months old-now he's a year and it's been so fun to see him become familiar with it-he loves father goose and always stops what he's doing and smiles when the phone rings.     I loved everything about this CD, even the packaging, which looks like a children's board book. Musically, the selections are great. Our three boys get in the car and say "Number 6, number 6." That's "Father Goose" and it's a great tune. My three year old bobs his head in his car seat and sings out the lyrics. We also love "All My Friends Live in the Woods" and "King Kong Kitchie." Finally, a children's CD that kids and adults will enjoy. Thanks!

    We love all the Dan Zanes cd's. This is the most upbeat. There is a sophistication to it that not found in other kid's cds but it is still light hearted and fun. Our daugher loves it and it is the perfect gift for new parents who will be eternally grateful to have something they will enjoy as much as their kids do.

    As a horn player, I listen to the music rather than the marketing. This CD is pretty good overall. It definately makes the top 20 as far as kids CD's. The production needed a little clarity, but overall, not a bad first effort

    I'd listen to this CD even if I didn't have kids--it's that good! Far and away the best children's CD I've heard. I wish there were more musicians out there like Dan Zanes who understand that music for little kids doesn't have to be sappy and condescending; that it can be both hip and cool and sweet and innocent at the same time.

    Both my baby and I are crazy about this CD! We listen, sing, and dance to it literally every day and enjoy it more and more each time. The songs include a lot of old favorites and some terrific original material. I have no musical talent, but the Rocket Ship Beach singers helped me loosen up, shed any ol' fuddy-duddy inhibitions, and join in the fun! The content quality of this CD makes it as enjoyable for parents as for kids. My only gripe is that not all the lyrics are printed on either the web site or the CD jacket due to copyright issues. I hope the copyright holders will allow Dan to post the lyrics so that we tone-deaf types can have an easier time butchering their tunes. Meanwhile, I hope there are more Rocket Ship Beach CDs to follow!!!

    This is by far the finest children's album I have ever purchased in overall terms of music and packaging. The album is packaged in a storybook format that is similar to a combination of a Golden Book and one of Richard Scarry's wonderful children's illustrated Big Books. The music is a wonderful mix of updated classics and some contemporary tunes. Dan Zanes and his friends should be very proud of what they have produced. This is a perfect holiday gift for any family that has younger kids or grandkids.
