The labels from the Exhibition are quoted below:
On the sound sculpture, "“The audio recording you are hearing was created by Robert Danziger using a combination of personal field recordings and commercial sound effects. The recording is comparable to a movie soundtrack in recreating the nighttime experience of the Monterey Peninsula around 1910. Danziger’s creative process began by viewing digital images of the nocturnes selected for Painting by Moonlight. “Sound sculpture is very much about setting the stage,” he explained. “Here we have different times, places and artists perspective. And yet something unified them that allows us to view them as being all within earshot of you - the observer and listener. What do you hear standing amongst these homes and castles? “”
On the Exhibition, "While the Monterey Peninsula was frequently celebrated for the unique light that flooded its coastline, many artists found it equally inspiring by night. Cloaked in fog and bathed in the glow of the moon, evening heightened the dramatic appeal of the scenery. It also endowed the landscape with an appealing sense of mystery.
The Marble Gallery of the Art of Central California features a selection of night-time paintings – called Nocturnes. The painting on the central wall, is a subdued, twilight scene by Armin Hansen, depicting fisherman who are watching a sinking boat from the safety of the shore. In addition to this evocative portrayal, the gallery contains works by early California masters such as Jules Tavernier, Charles Rollo Peters, Gottardo Pazzoni and contemporary artists Barry Masteller and Paul Roehl. It also features an audio component – a sound sculpture by Robert Danziger – that replicates the nocturnal life of the Monterey Peninsula around the turn of the Century."
