notes

"The organ-drenched brand of '70s metal is the most obvious antecedent of Darediablo, a New York City outfit that combines heavy rock with crisp rhythmic work and unexpected shifts. Their third full-length CD, Bedtime Stories, is not for the faint of heart. From the thumping opener, "Sigurd the Dragon Slayer," to the dynamic closer, "Shipping & Handling," the album rocks out relentlessly. And make no mistake, this is a rock band. Those looking for head-in-the-clouds noodling should go elsewhere."
-- JamBase.com, September 2002

"The instrumental sledgehammer that is this band . . . keeps its feet firmly grounded in rumbling TNT-charged energy, but nevertheless gets a nod from the experimental school of noisemaking. No wonder Darediablo draws such a crowd."
-- NYRock.com, May 2002

"This mostly instrumental rock trio . . . rock with more power and finesse than most bands twice their size and wattage."
-- Village Voice, 26 February 2002

Darediablo started out as a kind of mish-mosh of hard rock, jazz, and stoner rock, but has managed to focus these sounds into a style that's particularly suited to the instruments: guitar, bass, and double-neck, Fender Rhodes and Hammond Organ pumped through a wall of effects and distortion, and drums handled with an innate sense of rock and rhythmic subtlety.

We take it as a good sign that neither we nor any of our fans can describe our sound. We hear a lot of "kind of like Foo Fighters and AC/DC without vocals," and "like Pink Floyd, but with power chords." Whatever works for you, we say.

You can also hear us in soundtracks. Darediablo has appeared in many television series and features:

* SORORITY LIFE (MTV, 2002)
* DOWN LOW: LIFE IN THE D-LEAGUE (ESPN, 2001-02)
* SPORTS CENTURY (ESPN, 2002)
* THE LIFE (ESPN, 2000-01)
* THE WILD ONION (ESPN, 2001)

  • straight-up 70's rock
    author: bistromath

    If, every now and then, "Inna Gadda da Vida" runs through your head for no explicable reason, get this CD. Man, I miss this kind of music ... totally unlike the ultrapolished teeny-pop and the suburban angst noise that gets the airtime. I give the CD a 5+ for freshness and a 3 for songwriting (gets a trifle predictable). But I will definitely buy more of their CDs ...

    Neil young (The music itself has nothing to do with him) once said " nothing is beautiful without uglyness", and i'm sure these guys have the same philosophy - it's like taking a ride with Jesus, while the devil's catching up on you from behind .

  • The best '70s Rhodes tone since Jan Hammer's...
    author: Elias Granillo

    Darediablo boasts the best ‘70s Rhodes tone since Jan Hammer’s Mahavishnu days, the chunkiest Hammond this side of “The Barbarian,” and makes most stoner rock bands sound overproduced—the grit these ten Bedtime Stories end up caked with only adds more oomph! every time. More precisely, Chad Royce, Jake Garcia and Matt Holford are to flat-out rock what Dennis Chambers, Billy Sheehan and John Novello are to funk and jazz. Garcia’s primarily a guitarist, though (he overdubs some bass here and there), and ably steers these diabolic vignettes in unison with keyboardist Holford. Royce’s role as the problem child of Mr. & Mrs. Paice-Ward won’t be matched anytime soon. “Sigurd The Dragon Slayer” is all set to be cued to some action-horror thriller’s main titles, it’s as malefic as anything by Goblin or Carpenter, or your money back. Dig the disjointed guitar solo! [This is an excerpt—click on the link for the full review!]

    If you're one to cringe when you think of instrumental rock, then you haven't heard this band. Mastering atmospheric spaciousness of Floyd, this NY trio weaves layers of guitar, distorted organ, bass, Fender Rhodes, and drums, flinging your woes to the wind. Particularly popular among cdbaby employees.

  • One word...Innovative!!!
    author: Mike B.

    The more listens I give to Bedtime stories the more I enjoy it.One thing in particular is that none of the instruments are pushed to the background.They are all up up front and free to express.And express they do!!The drummer utilizes his kit per maximo!Bass/guitar-all there!Finally the keyboard man-One word...Innovative!!!

    This cd really rocks, I've seen these guys live and would travel a long way to see them again. Their cd feeding frenzy is also a must have. So buy this cd from cd baby now.

  • You Will Wear This Disc Out.
    author: Big E in Big D

    Nothing corporate about this, just three guys courageous enough to lay down tracks with enough fuzz and distortion to make the rock gods of yesteryear smile with glee. You can even hear hiss between the bridges on StheDS. Who said the Yanks have no soul? Darediablo is Hard Rock decanted by a group that worships its roots. Buy this CD.

  • A good instrumental recording
    author: Bo Weasel

    Actually I'd give it about a 3.25 stars. I ordered this the same day I ordered one of the band's live CDs. I'd give the live one a 4. This one has too much lead organ for my tastes. On the live recording the primary role of the keyboardist is to handle the bass duties, while on Bedtime Stories the organ is given a much more prominent lead voice, and frankly it sounds a wee bit cheesy, IMHO. Absolutely love the way the guitar is recorded, though - sounds like they've got the needles into serious red zone territory.

  • Attacking classic rock with a new approach
    author: Trebor Mett

    I keep wanting to listen to this - it reminds me of Atomic Rooster's approach, but with a more modern feel. Very heavy - the layers of keyboards and bass/guitar have great hooks, but not in an obvious way. Yet the compositions seem familiar through their density. I think high powered haunting might be one way to say it. Highly recommended!

  • Cool ,spooky organ driven instrumental prog(post rock?)!
    author: Psychatrone Rhonedakk

    Yeah! This is fun! A bit like a soundtrack to a spooky ,rockin' movie! Instrumental post rock (dare I say prog?)that really has all the right moves! Lots of organ , fun song titles , and great musiciansip make this an all-'round winner!

  • Fresh, Creative, a Must Have
    author: K.Hanna

    Incredibly inventive,well arranged melodies on dist.organ ....crisp ambients,at times ethereal.Great guitar/bass lines,hard driven with a jazz element,very cool..reminds me of Geezer,JPJones.Drum section is super tight and follows the rhythms well,great off-beat syncopation. I'm not to much into genres/categories so I wont use any, however if you like Jon Lord-Purple, Crimson, or the Apes, you will love this.

  • Unique
    author: Johnny Million

    This CD is a pleasant, fresh, listen... I really enjoy the textures and the high quality of the recording but it gets a little repetitive even after a couple of listens. I bought it on faith after listening to the samples and I'm still glad I did.

  • Deep Purple when they were a garage band with no vocalist.
    author: Matthew Ogan

    Raw but well recorded music. The music is focused but with an individual style that lets the keyboard and guitar explore, unrestrained. After listening to this CD, I will buy more Darediablo.
