Album Notes

"Teenage kicks are always great, but so are fully grown subversive rock and rollers; and Darien Brahms is one of those," describes The Boston Phoenix, adding that her sound is "...an odd but grabbing mix of sophistication and raw edges. Her voice is deep and soulful, (her) melodies are skillfully crafted...." Billboard magazine has recently declared Brahms one of the Maine acts "on the verge of breaking out beyond the Northeast."

The year 2000 saw the independent release of her solo CD, "Little Bundle of Sugar," which has drawn critical acclaim as well. Here's how the press is responding:

"Little Bundle of Sugar is, as Brahms' records usually are, a breath of fresh air."
-Face

"Brahms' singing is strong, her delivery impeccable and self-confident. She also plays a damn good guitar."
-Casco Bay Weekly

"Brahms has returned with another dose of confident folk rock confessionals that plumb the depths of love, lust and letdown with a balance of technical polish and ragged soul."
-The Portland Phoenix

Her distinctive style combined with high energy live performances has landed Brahms gigs at venues such as Boston's Paradise lounge and New York's CBGB, opening for the likes of Daniel Lanois, Warren Zevon, Bob Geldof, Bikini Kill and the Violent Femmes. She has collaborated in the studio and on stage with singer songwriter Cindy Bullens, guitar luminary Marc Ribot and members of Rustic Overtones. In her hometown of Portland, Maine, she has won "Best Vocalist" and "Best Performer" five times.

Darien Brahms has a sound and style of her own, a welcome dose of brash honesty and skilled musicianship. She is an unabashed rocker with solid roots and a racous guitar presence. Whether playing solo or backed by her stellar rhythm section (drummer Matt Staples and bassist Paul Chamberlain), she commands attention, pure and simple.

Electric eclectic

This album is really varied in its style. For example, the songs Whistle Boat (quiet, sweet vocals and melody) and Gold to Me (belted out vocals, upbeat music) could be by totally different artists. One thing that is consistent, however, is the quality of the music and the earnestness of Ms. Brahms' voice. It's very catchy, soulful and all that good stuff.

"Little Bundle of Sugar" aptly describes this debut cd from the talented, husky voiced Brahms. It's a gem in all the chick rock shlock available these days. Every song is memorable and well constructed. Best of luck to an old soul/ new talent.
