Only once in a while do you come across a performer that pins you to your seat.
There is much to be said of the spring-fed well, but to drink form it's source! Darlene has spent the past 12 years travelling the continent and abroad, finding the roots of the music she loves. This journey has seasoned an inquisitive, uniquely-talented and very expressive performer.
"Darlene has a huge range of vocal & musical styles, reflecting wide travel & deep interest in the music of many clutures. The first time I heard her sing was not from a stage, but late at night at a bonfire party in the Dublin Mountains." -Hot Press Magazine, Dublin
Her voice, at times, is as soft & gentle as a 'Wake-up Lullaby' or Irish seanos ('Is Tu Mo Ghrá') ... but slip into a different tune, and Darlene, with a rich strong voice, evokes a different character from each tale (such as Sojourner Truth in 'Ain't I a Woman', or a good ol' country boy in 'I Didn't Buy It'), or the ancient Gipsy-Finn soul that is within her. Her story-telling abilities are the stitching that binds the quilt of multiple musical genres with an infectious sense of spirit & adventure.
As a musician, DARLENE has performed with a multitude of diverse acts, playing rythym, bass and lead guitar to everything from Ska to Country to Disco. She plays guitar with an impassioned flair, combining bass & rythym and sometimes adding in the percussion of her boots 'n bells on a wooden stage. Her performances include styles of European Gipsy and 1st Nations' Music.
The Albums
The 1st ('Absence of Uniformity'), was recorded in Los Angeles with a slew of local musician-friends who now tour the world over. It is reminiscent of her musical roots in Blues & Jazz, and has a full-band swing to it.
The more recent album ('MOTEL DARLENE') is acoustic-oriented, with a variety of folk-roots music ... a definite influence from her journeys throughout N.America on Motorcycle, and a 5-year sojourn in Ireland. The bulk of 'MOTEL DARLENE' was recorded there, in Eire, and ranges from Darlene-solo, to the addition of many a high-spirited, accomplished musician who she played & performed with during her stint on the Emerald Isle. (Some of those musicians are the Russian Gipsy band 'Loyko' and members of 'KILA'.)
DARLENE's vibrant live performances affects people of all ages & musical tastes, and always leaves them wanting more ... more of her energy ... more of the spirit ... more of the Journey that is DARLENE.
