Magical
author: Babak Ghavami
Monserrat Figueras Magnificently singing Baroque, Mercedes Sosa the Argentine Diva’s heart stopping performance of Gracias Ala Vida, Diego El Cigala Spain’s Magical Flamenco singer and his supernatural voice ! Elements of each you’ll find in Darya Dadvar’s silky, warm, wholesome, Angelic voice and Outstanding performances.
Darya was trained as an opera singer in France, and that is evident in Her performance of the songs of the varied dialects of the Iranian lands . Persian has sometimes been called the “sweetest of tongues”, yet delivering it in an Operatic style is simply beyond belief, and that is what makes Darya Dadfar’s performances magnificent, magical, and utterly exceptional.
Every nuance in the play of her voice, and the fluidity by which she delivers each and every word is simply Masterful. Many a times you ‘d get tired and bored of listening to a collection of songs by the same singer, not with her. As in Diego El Cigala and Bebo Valdez’s superb work Lagrimas Negras, you could listen to Darya’s songs time and again and still yearn for more.
Her two CD collections available are recorded live at concerts in Berlin and Toronto. The Berlin concert is in a Classical Operatic style, whereas the Toronto concert is more of a Jazzy style. In both collections you’ll find song after song that has been meticulously planned, masterfully arranged, and a delivery that is simply astounding.
The songs are in different dialects of Iran, for example “ Jinge Jan” is in her native Gilaki dialect of the western Caspian region, whereas “ Dardimand” is in the Azeri tongue of the Northwestern Iranians. “Naz Parastoo” is a poem from the much loved and admired Khorasani poet Mehdi Akhavan Saales expressing his love for Iranians of the many regions, and “ Dota cheshme Siah dari” ( You have two black eyes) a painful love song from the late thinker, intellectual, and theatre director Bijan Mofid, whom many of us regard as an Icon. “Yade Man Kon” (remember me) is a unique collage of songs by the French Diva Edith Piaf and her Persian counterpart Delkash. “Mah Pishanoo“ is a heart warming love song, a dialogue between a couple in a sweet Persian sub dialect. “Sarzamine Man” (My Land) is a Beautiful and heart wrenching love song for our Beloved nation which brings to mind Mercedes Sosa‘s performance of Gracias Ala Vida upon her return to Argentina and the audience’s earth shaking response.
I’d highly recommend her albums to those who enjoy this type of music, that includes Non Iranian speakers.
And as for Darya, I’d say Go girl Go, and in the wise words of Mr. Spock and Yoda “ May you live long and Prosper” and “May the Force be with You”.
