Album Notes

Databass is founded by producer Sean Abreu and is a collaborative project. "Water Rites" is the first album from Databass. An EP titled "Fluid" was released earlier in 2001 and a full legth self titled CD followed shortly.

The songs from all the works are a tapestry of musical styles and aesthetic interests of Sean's and his collaborators. The music is not arranged conventionaly, inspired by the learnings Sean gains when he writes music for indie-feature films. The ability to write songs that end in and entirely different place from where you began. A journey literaly takes place. The production is a deeply layered structure of organic instrumentation and highly manipulated analog and digital sound. Real drums, bass, loops and samples interact with guitars, vocal perfomance and melody.

The dance songs flow from trance to house to break beat. But the music is more cinematic. The vocal performance of experimental poet m. mara-ann dances with the music. The two elements lead and follow one another as they paint a lush literary landscape.

There are hip-hop elements in Jill Tracy's feature in "The Favourite of Fortune." Her vocal performance in mysterious and magical.

Jazz vocalist, songwriter Jeff Hallam lends character vocals and a stripped down vocal performance with his contribution, "Nothing of You."

Databass music is so mutated with influence and a consice experimental direction you will hear something new many times over.
