Album Notes

The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings 2008 calls Dave Askren "a lively composer who hasn't yet made the deserved impact"

Many groups have combined elements of latin music with jazz in different ways - resulting in a wide range of styles falling under the heading "latin-jazz." Trio Nuevo is no exception. The widely varied influences and backgrounds of all of these players result in a unique and exciting blend.

DAVE ASKREN - has performed with a variety of jazz/latin jazz/instrumental artists, including Bob Moses, Antonio Hart, Delfeayo Marsalis, Hendrik Muerkins, Stuart Hamm, Bruce Arnold, Bobby Shew, "Rhubumba", Sal Cracciolo, Jimmy Branly, Joey DeLeon Jr, David King and Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus), Ben Schacter, Gray Sargent, Kevin Eubanks, Gary Foster, Tony Rizzi's "Wire Choir" with Pete Christlieb; Mike Vax.

EDDIE RESTO - has played bass with a who's who of the latin jazz world including Mongo Santamaria, Eddie (as well as Charlie) Plamieri, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Willie Colon/Ruben Blades, Hilton Ruiz, Jorge Dalto, and Ray Barretto, as well as "straight ahead" artists such as Max Roach, Sonny Stitt and Kenny Kirkland.

WALTER RODRIGUEZ - is an in-demand L.A. based drummer and percussionist, whose resume includes Arturo Sandoval, Alex Acuna, Yanni, Herb Alpert and Strunz & Farah, as well as as long list of CD and film credits.

RAMON BANDA - Previously a longtime member the Poncho Sanchez band, versatile drummer Ramon is a mainstay of the L.A. latin jazz scene with his Banda Brothers band. His credits also include Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Freddie Hubbard, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Eddie Harris, Joey De Francesco, Arturo Sandoval and Terence Blanchard.

Dave Askren - guitar, Eddie Resto - bass, Walter Rodriguez - drums/percussion, Ramon Banda - drums/percussion.

Difficult to resist
author: Scott Yanow, L.A. Jazz Scene
...The gentle group sound is very appealing, as is the subtle creativity and high musicianship. The results are very likable, quite musical and difficult to resist.

Excellent new release
author: Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net
"Askren dances across his strings with both power and grace, straddling the line between straight ahead jazz and Latin fearlessly. Intelligent, creative and masterful, "Trio Nuevo+" is highly recommended."
