Album Notes

David LeRoy Biller is a veteran musician, guitarist, songwriter and producer. He has toured internationally with artists such as Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, the Asylum Street Spankers, and Deke Dickerson in a variety of musical styles including country, rockabilly, blues, jazz, and Django Reinhardt-style gypsy music. The Hot Guitars of Biller and Wakefield on Hightone Records and Travis County Pickin' on HMG have been favorites of guitar and music fans everywhere. His current projects include his gypsy jazz band, Les Niglos, and the Jazz Pharaohs.

Dave talks about "LeRoy's Swing":

"This group was originally formed for just one purpose... for us to have some fun playing the music of our hero, Django Reinhardt. Once we started playing some gigs, we quickly found that there was a good deal of interest in what we were doing. People seemed to really enjoy the music and we noticed that more and more people were coming to either listen or dance.

"The process of recording the album was simple: we would just sit in room all together and play our songs live and see what came out. The recording environment was such that we felt as though we were just jamming for fun and as a result, the performances are very loose and spontaneous. Of course there are mistakes but I think that what we did achieve is a raw and spirited feeling. It was never meant to sound slick or perfect. We just wanted to have some fun, which has been our philosophy from day one.

"I should point out that we have no interest in trying to revolutionize Django's music, which has been so skillfully carried on by the many wonderful European gypsy musicians, nor do we mean to imitate it. We simply love the sound of it, the beautiful guitar tones, the swinging rhythm feel that is reminiscent of early american jazz, and the wonderfully ornate melodic style. Naturally, the gypsy jazz influence figures prominently in our approach. I hope, if nothing else, that the listener can get a sense of how much fun was had making this record."

REVIEWS

Not only Django's technique, but Django's soul too…
author: Fred Turgis
You can find a lot of guitar players who play with the Django's technique, but few manage to catch Django's soul. Dave Biller surely can. He plays those songs with virtuosity, but not too fast, as Django did. The good idea of this cd is to use the clarinet side of gipsy music, wich gives it a real originality… And as Mr Biller said, you can hear the fun all along these record. So, need I say more? Buy it
