OPERATION: LOVE BREAKS ALL THE RULES
Last summer, DAVE FALK (singer/songwriter) and JASON GARDNER (producer, drummer) met up in the legendary "1369" in Central Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dave had the blueprints ready for a songwriting operation. JAY was back from touring with Pamela Means. Dave knew JAY'S work and was sure he could perform magic in the studio as producer, drummer and back-up singer. Over a warm cup of hazelnut latte, they discussed getting together a group of players to pull off "the sting." Jay knew all the right people for the job.
Jay called in WES, an expert craftsman of both bass and architecture to lay down the basic song structure. They brought him in in between practice sessions for his Paradise show with Balla Tounkara. Next, Jay called in guitarist and electronics specialist "GOODY" (David Goodrich), finding him in between shows of the Ani Difranco tour with Erin McKeown. A winner of back to back music awards with Groovasaurus ('97, '98), GOODY had the know-how and electronics wizardry to pull off the job. DAVE then called upon SNATCH (Jon Natchez), saxophonist for Skavoovie, and love interest Lisa Housman, winner of the Great American Song Contest.
The group met up at Squid Hell, under the auspices of Expert Engineer, Eric Michael Cohen. The Sting went down, and 14 days, 7 musicians and 11 tracks later, Love Breaks All the Rules was born.
THE STORY
On his soon to be released second album, Wherever You Go . . . There You Are!, Boston-based singer/songwriter Dave Falk sings about disaster-ridden trips, lost love, and visits with "Grandma". With impeccable comic timing, heartfelt lyrics, and a voice that has been compared to Ryan Adams and Bob Dylan, Dave charms critics and fans alike with his "Falk Music".
Dave Falk's first album, Love Breaks All the Rules, was released in the spring of 2002 to rave reviews. His song, In the Light, reached #1 on the mp3.com Alternative Country charts, while his song Peace O' Mind received international acclaim when it was featured in the film Director's Bugs, which won first place in 2003 Dublin Film Festival (Experimental Category).
Dave has performed at clubs, colleges, and coffeehouses, both solo and teaming up with Great American Song Contest Winner, Lisa Housman. Dave co-hosted the Out of the Blue open mike last year with Housman, as well as the Thursday night concert series at the All Asia Café, attracting many well-known and up and coming musicians to these venues. Dave and Lisa graced the cover of the Jewish Advocate this spring and were featured in the MIT Graduate Student News. Mare Streetpeople of the Choir of Angels Coffeehouse had this to say about Dave and Lisa:
Their great songwriting makes for an evening of attentive listening . . . Lisa and Dave's songs are memorable, thought-provoking . . . young, fresh, energetic and empathetic tunes that reflect their personalities.
Recently a couple of Dave and Lisa fans fell in love at a show and asked the duo to sing at their wedding.
Dave has opened for and shared the stage with Pamela Means, Joel Cage, Michael Troy, and Kevin So, among others. Dave has also played the subways and Harvard Square, and enjoys bringing a smile to the weariest commuter's face. In the words of GODS OF MUSIC.COM:
[Love Breaks All the Rules] has that kind of familiar sound that sticks by you as though it's been a lifelong friend. I had never heard of Dave Falk before hearing this track, but after the song finished playing, it seemed as though he had known me . . . The tune catches hold of you even in its simple nature, and the vocals just roll off his tongue as I'm sure only he could sing them.
Bob Alonge of the New Song Folk Club writes,
David Falk makes you close your eyes, think twice, and ask yourself- 'Wow, is that really coming out of him?' He is unassuming only until he starts to play. Then he stops you dead in your tracks and makes you listen.
