Album Notes

Dave Martyn is used to wearing many hats: husband, father, music teacher, worship leader, conference speaker, handyman. For the creation of "Joyride," he wore the hats of songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, engineer, and producer.

The album began with a few songs that Dave wrote for weddings- those of his friends, family, and for his own wedding to his wife Suzy waaaaaay back in 1992.

The songs were then crafted into a concept album, so that they became a carefully unified work of music that tells a story of faith and love. It takes the listener on a "joyride" through the exhilaration, contemplation, frustration, and peace that one experiences as a romance grows and matures.

The music spans a vast range of styles from world-flavored pop to contemporary jazz to rock to folk to r&b. Many of the lyrics are rooted in the book of Psalms, but they bear a contemporary style and a disarming earnestness. At the core of each song is a memorable melody and a heartfelt expression of something that is both beautiful and powerful.

Of course, even a solo effort like this one is only possible with the support of friends and family. You'll have to read the album notes for a comprehensive list, but one notable contribution comes from Dave's cousin-in-law, if you will, Richard Oh, who provides the wonderful lead vocals on "Surely as he Waves." The most significant contribution undoubtedly came from Dave's wife Suzy, who took photos, hit the "record" button a couple of times, and got the kids out of the house while the mic was live! And it was Suzy who provided the inspiration to write music about love, and the impetus to record it.
