On its surface, “Fantasy Girl” may seem like just another lust-oriented club track. It incorporates a classic romantic tension plotline—meeting a woman who fulfills your wildest fantasy ideals, and then trying to convince her that you can fulfill hers as well. But so far, she just doesn’t seem to be buying into your efforts to win her over.

However, it’s much more than that. From the lyrics to the provocative cover image, it is one expression of a reclamation of sexual energy I squelched somewhat as I entered my thirties. This ran alongside giving up other types of fantasies as well, given that sexuality is intertwined with creativity, spirituality, and other fundamental aspects of being.

On my life coaching blog at idealistcoach.com, I’m celebrating the launch of the song with a small competition asking other people to describe either a) the qualities of their fantasy girl, or b) the qualities that make them a fantasy girl. I’m encouraging responses that don’t necessarily conform to societal stereotypes. Through this, I hope to encourage others to reclaim their own fantasies, as well as elements of their own positive sexual energy that they may have forgotten.

Beyond the realm of sex and romance, “Fantasy Girl” begs us to consider how we often give up a range of fantasies over time. We become convinced that we cannot attain our wildest dreams, or we tweak them to fit societal norms. But our fantasy girl will continue to taunt us, whether we choose to actively pursue her or not. So get out there and dance with her.
