David Berns began playing the piano and organ at age of 9. He started playing the organ in church at the age of 12 and has volunteered his time to serve as a music minister for over 30 years. He currently serves as a music minister at the parish of St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. At St. Edward he plays the piano and organ for various liturgies and also accompanies the Celebration Singers, a 30 member adult choir. Dave also plays for weddings and provides background music for receptions, dinner parties, fund raisers and other social gatherings.
Music is a ministry for Dave. “I see myself as an instrument and a vehicle that can lead others to praise God,” he says. “We all have special qualities, gifts and talents, and I think it is important that we share them with others.” Dave started recording in 2001 and he gave his gift of music, quite literally, as a Christmas gift to friends and family. It was such a hit that he decided to record a full-length album. Dave released Sacred Treasures in 2004 and Beyond the Stillness…Christmas Treasures in 2006. His music has been very well received and comments from listeners confirm his mission. “The most rewarding thing for me has been to hear how the music on my recordings has touched people,” he says. Listeners have told him they play the CD when they put their children to sleep. Teachers have said they play it during silent work time. Many people play the album in their car or as background music for entertaining guests in their home. One woman played the album for her unborn child by placing headphones on her belly. Another person told Berns they played “Sacred Treasures” as their loved one died of cancer. Dave’s music is very relaxing and soothing and is enjoyed by people of all ages. The CD's make wonderful gifts.
BEYOND THE STILLNESS…CHRISTMAS TREASURES
I’ve had many requests for a “Christmas Album” so I decided to record some of my favorite songs of the season. In recording these selections I tried to stay with the same easy listening style that has made my previous recordings so well received. I am proud to include some of my own arrangements of these traditional melodies. In addition to these traditional favorites, I composed “Beyond the Stillness” in memory of my parents and I am proud to include it on this album. Thank you for letting me be a part of your holiday season. May these selections add warmth to your season as you experience your own Christmas Treasures.
Wishing you peace and many blessings,
David Berns
SACRED TREASURES
The piano selections on “Sacred Treasures” are some of my personal favorites that I have played as a music minister. The music and the artists that composed these pieces have been an inspiration to me. Over the years I have added my own personal touch to these hymns. This recording came about in response to the many parishioners who have asked me to put some of these instrumentals on a recording. May this music lead you to reflect on the treasures in your life.

Well-crafted group of heartfelt piano instrumentals
author: Carol Swanson
On Beyond the Stillness...Christmas Treasures, music minister David Berns delivers a well-crafted group of heartfelt piano instrumentals that many will find worth treasuring. The generous album (56 minutes) presents music that is rich and contemplative without being ponderous. The mix is a classical/new age blend, and will provide rewarding "easy listening" moments for a broad audience.
I like Berns' song selection a lot. He starts with uniquitous holiday chestnuts (Silent Night, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas), throws in some contemporary gems (Breath of Heaven, Mary, Did You Know?), tosses in two of my favorite classical pieces (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring), and even manages to include an authentic Berns original, Beyond the Stillness to close the album. The new piece is representative of what Berns does throughout; it shines with lovely simplicity and a thoughtful, relatively slow tempo. Of the batch, I vote for Lo, How a Rose as my flower of choice; Berns' "new age" arrangement is refreshing and entirely respectful---NICE!
David Berns tells me that each sale results in a contribution to a food bank in Iowa. And isn't that what Christmas is all about? Kick back, and let Berns send some treasures your way.
