Artist description
The David Clare Band are an explosive folk-rock group from Dublin, Ireland, who formed in the summer of 2000. The group are led by singer/guitarist David Sheridan Clare, and they have released two critically lauded albums on A.C. Records - 2001's The David Clare Band and 2005's Throwing Shapes.

The band's poetic songs, which are written by David, have been compared by reviewers to those of Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello, and they tackle romantic, social, and spiritual concerns with insight and wit.

The band's sound is beautifully enriched by keyboardist/producer Ronan Johnston, whose keyboard chops have graced many Irish chart hits, and who, as a producer, has worked with some of the biggest names in Irish music, including Bob Geldof and The Saw Doctors. Other members of the group include Brian Tavey on lead guitar, David Blake on bass, Michael Goss on drums, and Deirdre Clare on backing vocals.

Since forming, the group have been playing shows in Ireland, the US, and the UK. For more information about the band, visit their website at www.garageband.com/artist/DavidClareBand or write to them at DClare1@eircom.net.

  • Excellent! A masterpiece. Beautiful songwriting and playing.

This CD is quite excellent. The musical style is much like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Elvis Costello. The guitar work is great, the melodic bass lines are hard to come by these days, and the other instruments add such a nice blend to the overall sound. I particularly enjoy the touch of mandolin and piano in some of the songs. Great album!

  • Gorgeous arrangements...Melodic pop with a message...

From the first notes of the first song I was impressed with the sound of this record. I'm a sucker for melodic bass and a great organ sound. David's voice is also smooth and accessible, nicely balanced with sparing backup vocal touches. He reminds me a bit of a young Elvis Costello in his vocals, but the songwriting has none of that cynical sharp edge and more smooth pop like a Del Amitri or the Gin Blossoms. The arrangements are gorgeous; not too much, not too slick, just right. It's well done melodic pop. With a message. Some people might have a bias to tune out any music written with a religious/Christian perspective. If that describes you, try to leave that at the door and enjoy this well written, played and produced record. Musicians are all going to enjoy "Seeing America" , and everyone can relate to the rocking bluesy "I'm Through With You". Hopefully not too many can relate to "The Stalker Song" but it's a good job of tongue-in-cheek songwriting. Stacey Board

  • Reminiscent of Caedmons Call, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello...Melodious tunes
    author: Www.irishchristians.org

The first album for the David Clare Band is a worthy first offering for the folk rock scene here in Ireland. With a style reminiscent of Caedmon’s Call and detectable Dylan and Elvis Costello influences on the album, it contains much to interest and challenge. The songs have an unlaboured flow of melodious tunes that you will find yourself humming after but a few listenings. The lyrics have an authentic real-life ring with a poetic style. They often draw you to ponder or evoke questions by the way they are written. My favourite tracks are "Aileen" and "Before the Fall." The lyrics of "Irish Lament" are most provoking. David dedicates "Irish Lament" to the "memory of the millions of Irish people who left Ireland searching for a better life, but only found loneliness, grinding poverty, and spiritual exile." My impression is that the band has a bright future, with its rich combination of sounds.

  • An impressive display of songwriting talent...Edgy (and) tight.
    author: Bostonia Magazine

Folk-rock is an overcrowded field, with many good bands competing for airplay and gigs. But while Clare, who is based in Dublin, has his work cut out for him, he'll be helped with this CD, an impressive display of his songwriting talent. Some of the songs are edgy, not least "The Stalker Song," and the playing is tight. Taylor McNeil

  • Tight musicianship...Excellent singing and songwriting...Classic roots music.
    author: Cross Rhythms Magazine

Purveyors of excellent roots rock, Dublin's David Clare Band are a bunch of tight musicians backing the excellent singing and songwriting of one David Clare. The band includes some pretty cool keyboard contributions from Emmaus member Ronan Johnston and collectively they have the roots thing pretty well nailed. Obviously, being Irish boys, there are some Celtic musical inflections here and there but mainly this is classic roots music that has wide appeal. Clare's passionate songwriting takes some surprising twists and turns so you get humorous observation about the ridiculousness of stalking in "The Stalker Song" and the "Irish Lament" takes in the histories of those Irish folks who have left the nation to seek fortune elsewhere. Meanwhile, "Aileen" is a mournful song of unrequited love which sees Mr. Clare unable to escape from his strong feelings and move onwards. David Clare manages to attack life and love, faith and issues with keen insight, good humour and a heart that searches for redemption. Rating: 9/10 Mike Rimmer
