ALBUM NOTES

This CD was a pleasure to create. It is truly wonderful to be an independent artist who composes, performs and produces original works. Many of the tunes on this recording had been “kicking around in my head” for many years. I first performed “Children’s Song”, “Cinderella”, “Island Blues” and “Passion Dance” at a benefit concert for Native Americans at Riverside Church in NY City about six years ago. “Circus” was composed in about 10 minutes. The composition borrows some of the compositional techniques of one of my favorite composers, J.S. Bach. The two part writing lends itself particularly well to finger style guitar. “The Jig is up” has a definite Celtic flavor. It was composed about a year ago when I was planning a concert tour of the Emerald Isle, England and Scotland. “Jimi” is a tribute to my all time favorite solid body electric guitarist Jimi Hendrix. “Melancholy” is all about the struggle most musicians face between beauty and poverty! “Spanish Phrases” is an improvisation which encompasses many of the rhythmic, harmonic and form related compositional devices traditional “Spanish” composers employ in their compositions. “Ballad” defines what it means to mature as a musician, i.e., you are no longer afraid to leave space between your musical ideas. “Waterfall” is the oldest composition on this CD. The work originally was intended for an ensemble. The concept originated from a trip to Smokey Mountain National Park in 1995.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

David Doig first began playing the guitar in 1964 at the age of 8. Like many children of that generation, I wanted to be a “rock star”. Throughout Jr. High and High school I performed with many rock and jazz ensembles. In 1973 I attended a summer evaluation clinic at the Berklee College of Music. Out of 800 applicants I attained the highest rating of all guitar clinicians. At this point the decision was made to pursue a career in music. I began to study Classical Guitar with Jerry Willard. Throughout the middle 70’s and early 80’s I performed opening Acts for major acts such as John Cougar Melancamp, The Stray Cats and The Dixie Dregs. I toured the country with concerts at UCLA, University of Santa Barbara and The University of Arizona with the Peter Borno Jazz Ensemble. In 1983 I made the decision to go school and study music “seriously”. I attained Bachelors Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Stony Brook University with performances at Symphony Space, Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall in NY City. In 1991 I made my solo debut in a sold out performance at Carnegie Halls Weill hall. From 1991-1996 I was a full time professor of music at Five Towns College in Dix Hills NY. I toured the country again in 1994 with solo recitals in the Denver Botanical Gardens and The Colorado Shakespeare festival. In 1996 I made the decision to start my own business, My business, The Bayport School of Music, is located at 568 Middle Road in Bayport NY. The school currently has over 50 students.

CURRENT PROJECTS

I am currently writing a guitar method book. The goal of the method is to instruct students interested in developing finger style guitar technique in ways to integrate improvisation within a guitar arrangement. The method will be available through my website: www.guitar-edu.com

I will be releasing several CD’s within the next several months. They will be available through: www.cdbaby@cdbaby.com

I am currently setting up some live performance events for fall 2006. Check my website for details.

REVIEWS

author: Paul Quinn
There is so much great music on this Cd! Beautiful songs and amazing arrangements. It may even take the listener multiple listenings to determine just where the melody stops and the solos begin. An added bonus is that this CD, unlike some other guitar albums, will not put you to sleep out of boredom-you'll want to listen to it again and again. Five out of Five stars. Buy this Cd.
