Album Notes

…about the music

Guitar Dreams is a sequel to the 2006 recording “Solo Music for Acoustic Guitar”. I find that playing unaccompanied nylon string guitar and working within the context of my own compositions allows a pure and direct connection with the creative process.

The music on this CD encompasses a wide variety of influences. The opening track, Shades of Green, pays tribute to one of my early influences, guitarist Roy Buchanan. “Angel” is my take on a slow blues. The tune was written in memory of a dog that passed away. “Celtic Mist” pays homage to Eric Johnston and his work “Cliffs of Dover”. “Leap Frog” is a funky little tune I wrote about 20 years ago for an ensemble. The tune was influenced by the compositions of “Tower of Power”. “Who Would Have Thought” is another tune I wrote many years ago. At one point this tune had lyrics (don’t worry, this version is an instrumental!). “The King” is dedicated to pompous people everywhere! “Dave’s Samba” was definitely influenced by the compositions of Chick Corea. “A Special Place” was inspired by the beauty John Coltrane created on his ballad “Naima”. “Horizon” is reminiscent of my early days on a sailboat and the vastness of the ocean. “Tenure Quack” was written as a guitar-saxophone duet over 30 years ago. It was influenced by an early John McLaughlin work titled “Extrapolation”. Frolic is dedicated to the joy of playing music!

Doctor Doig’ s ground breaking “Solo Music for Acoustic Guitar” released in 2006 redefined what a Solo Acoustic guitar could do as far as combining Classical Guitar technique with elements of improvisation within a solo guitar context.

David has recently released a new recording titled "Beacon-First Light". The recording features eight new compositions which are a colaboration between David and Paul Seal (Cathedral). The recording is available through CD Baby. Buy it now!
