Album Notes

david ell was born in Sheffield but spent his early years growing up in a small Scottish village, Falkland. He displayed a verve and passion for music from a young age, teaching himself piano, performing in local shows and writing his own music. For all that, he had no formal training. He has just finished his first studio album, entitled Wreckingball, which he recorded and mixed at Cava Studios in Glasgow. david ell maintains that he didn't set out to create any particular sound. However influences are hinted at in this debut album. It is no surprise to learn that david ell admires the music of bands such as Coldplay, U2, the Killers. Radiohead, Editors, the Doves and the Cure among others. As a male solo artist, comparisons are bound to be made to artists such as Damien Rice, James Blunt, Stephen Fretwell but while the tracks on his debut feature all lend themselves to more pared down accoustic versions, there is no doubt the finished sound of this album is closer in feel to the more orchestrated arrangements of the bands mentioned earlier. david ell is a multi-instrumentalist, he does everything on the album. Whilst his first love may well have been piano, this is very much a guitar driven album with layer upon layer of guitar parts driving the melody at the heart of these songs. According to his official web-site, his next project will be an EP of piano songs.
