Ex Mavericks/Storyville guitarist David Holt delivers a solo debut that mixes his blues, country and rock influences into a unique blend. Outstanding songwriting.

notes

David Holt's reputation as a legendary Texas guitar slinger and songwriter has already been established through his time with Storyville and The Mavericks. The release of his first solo album, "Perpetual Motion" is about to send that reputation into the stratosphere as he adds singer, producer and bandleader to his shingle.

David is joined by Mark Andes (Spirit/Heart), Tommie Taylor (Eric Johnson) and Muscle Shoals legend Spooner Oldham on an album that blends Texas firepower with sophisticated song structure, great lyrics and a terrific singing voice that will make you wonder why he's kept his mouth shut all these years. "Perpetual Motion" is a stunning "debut" that has been over 20 years in the making.

  • Why is this his first solo cd?

This is a great album. I have seen David Holt play with Storyville several times, so the guitar playing didn't surprise me; phenomenal as usual. What did surprise me was everything else...With Storyville's work, you only get a glimpse of what this guy is capable of doing; this album shows he can write/sing/tear it up on guitar in different styles with ease. With anyone else, the diverse playlist could easily produce nothing more than a valiant, though failed effort, but Holt gets the job done . I thought the cd was great. The whole album start to finish was great. David is a great musician and songwriter. I really like the new cut of searching understone.

  • Sweet and tasteful blues/country

What happens when a bluesman gets involved with some high profile bands and then blends his country leanings for about 20 years or so? If you are Austin’s David Holt and can list Storyville (Which included Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band, Double Trouble’s rhythm section) and country chart toppers, the Mavericks, on your résumé, the result is one sweet CD, Perpetual Motion. Holt’s smooth, velvety voice, combined with layers of catchy riffs, tasteful solos and blues groove, is a beautiful blend of new country and Austin style blues. Til The Wheels Fall Off draws the listener in with simple but effective, slightly overdriven chords, and a hot outro solo, and doesn’t let go though nine more tracks of country, blues and ballads. Walk on the Moon Again has gripping, mournful vocal hooks and Roadblock, is full of catchy riffs. The result is excellent. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait another 20 years for his second CD.
