'Musical Variations on Life'
by RJ Lannan, NewAgeReporter.com

If you want an earful of music that is peaceful, yet uplifting then you can't do better then "Unexpected Journey", the newest release from pianist composer David Mount. This solo piano recording is overflowing with bright, colorful stories of every day life set into song. Waking with the sun and saying goodnight to the moon and everything in between is the inspiration for David's opulent compositions.

Raindrops splashing in puddles that reflect the gray, somber days are present in the opening number Water Dance. As the serious tune echoes and returns, the drops plop and spray making tiny rings of water that ripple and play along with the music. It is as if the rain ever stops it would be a sad thing.

A very remarkable tune on "Unexpected Journey" is called Early Morning. Bright and fresh as a new summer day, the music holds promise and hope as we continue our outing. When the sun peeks over the horizon with its first pale golden rays there is light and warmth. There is new green growth and there a ripening taking place on the land and in our lives. This is one of my favorites.

Sometimes love is better expressed without the use of ordinary words. Hence, we have music. With a title like My Son, you can expect a lot of emotion, a little bit of confusion and a great deal of pride. This very heartfelt tune expresses it all with the expectation that if our children can be happy, then we can be happy too. It is every parent's wish.

He might be your mentor, a confidant or your brother. She might be a co-worker, an old school chum or your mother. They could all very well be your Bestest Friend. David plays a poignant piece in recognition of your buddy, your pal, your mate who is always there to help you through the gauntlet of life.

Sometimes life gets complicated. Unforeseen things happen and difficulties arise. There's just so many ways you can tackle a problem, and then there is the Final Approach. The time comes when perhaps the answer is to love until it hurts. This is a very pensive piece with a temperamental melody, but Mount's light touch softens the edges and smoothes out the wrinkles.

Fall Classic is a punchy-jaunty contemporary tune that commemorates autumn with its signal for change, all its vivid color, and the beginning, not the end of a new season. David's lively composition is a whirling dervish of golden leaves, blustery days and sparkling clear nights. Some really good riffs in this one.

The last cut is called Kauai Sunset. Kauai, Hawaii's most northwestern island is also called the Garden Isle and it is deeply cut with canyons, caves, fertile plains and rugged mountains. It is also the last point (except for Niihau) where you can watch the final rays of the golden sun liquefy into the cobalt ocean. The transformation is sad and beautiful at the same time just like this tune.

David's contemporary instrumental music is rife with emotion, relaxing in nature and inspirational without being obvious. You can put on this CD and take your own Unexpected Journey in your heart and mind and you will be right where you want to be. --RJ Lannan, NewAgeReporter.com

HIGH ON THE MOUNT
New Age/mood piano doesn't come any better than this CD by SoCal's David Mount- who's even better than that other David up in Oregon. With a couple of nicely upbeat tracks like "Evening Stroll" and a general seasonal/family inspiration that's both honest and melodic, David shows off some gorgeous licks and harmony. I've never heard of this artist but won't forget him now.

I find the pieces on this c.d. to be both inspirational and relaxing.
I recently purchased "Unexpected Journey." Listening to the original pieces on it has been a lifesaver during the busy and hectic holiday season, as I find they have both relaxed and clarified my thoughts. David Mount's arrangements are creative, lyrical and inspiring. He is a unique talent, and "Unexpected Journey" is a mandatory purchase for those who enjoy listening to beautiful piano instrumental music. I particularly loved the piece "My Son." I would highly recommend this c.d., and plan to share it with my other music-loving friends. It would make a wonderful gift at any time of the year !

Very satisfying
“Unexpected Journey” is a collection of original piano solos by David Mount, and is his third CD to date. Combining jazz, classical, and pop stylings, Mount’s music has a friendly warmth and openness that is very easy to like. Most of the twelve songs are contented and peaceful, but also contain a vibrance and energy that showcase Mount’s virtuosity at the piano. A seasoned performer and piano teacher, Mount’s ease with his instrument allows him to paint a broad range of musical pictures and emotional experiences with a variety of techniques and approaches.

“Water Dance” opens the album with a sparkling piece that has calm, tranquil moments and others that swirl. A great beginning! “My Son” is one of my favorites, conveying love and optimism with a gentle strength. I also really like “Final Approach,” which is more introspective and a bit darker. It has a mysterious, questioning feeling that is intriguing as well as touching. “Evening Stroll” is joy set to music. Lively and upbeat, this one also has a strong sense of fun and whimsy. “Today Is the Day” gets more serious, describing the combination of feelings of excitement, a little bit of fear, and the anticipation of a momentous day. “Goodbye My Friend” is another favorite, with its flowing melody and bittersweet mood - a very powerful piece. “Kauai Sunset” is as beautiful as the title implies. Sublimely peaceful and delicate, it’s easy to see light dancing on the water as the sun slips into the horizon and disappears.

“Unexpected Journey” is a very satisfying listening experience. The music is complex enough to evolve with each new listen, and is accessible enough to have in the background for other activities.

Stunningly beautiful and emotionally uplifting.
This CD certainly does take you on some "unexpected journeys" as you listen to all of the wonderful settings and emotions that David has set in each of his pieces. He has even taken and rearranged songs and made them his own with his amazing, individual style. This album is so calming and yet rejuvinating. I truly love this music. I know that it came from the heart, and that anyone who hears it can say that they've been touched by something special after listening to it. It is honestly a blessing ! Wonderfully done David !

Contemporary, stylistic, passionate.....
This CD is not just another solo project by a thoughtless composer doing music. It is a collection of melodies that relate Dave's life and passions. The quality of his musicianship is first rate and his subtle nuances and creative voicing keep the lister engaged. This CD has a high degree of excellence not only in the composing but the recording as well. Well done!
