i'm a native nebraskan (go huskers!) and, when i was a kid, i heard "wichita lineman" and that did it for me. i spent twenty-five years in los angeles focusing on songwriting, recording and producing. currently, i'm on a sabbatical from california, taking time off in the midwest to work on releasing a couple of new cds and writing a musical.
a few of the strange/great highlights that have supported my songhabit: piano player for harry anderson at harrah’s tahoe; top 40 cover band new year’s gig with THE zsa zsa in the crowd dancing the night away (in a plunging gown, might i add); cinemax comedy special tunes; soundtracks for cable; "nightstand with dick dietrick"; and various songs placed with various publishers.
a few of my song heroes:
* jimmy webb
* burt bacharach
* joni mitchell
* james taylor
* steely dan
* randy newman
* billy joel
* mason williams
* michael mcdonald
later on guys like marc cohn and elvis costello started killin' me, not to mention remarkable players like bill evans and coltrane that forced my brain to stretch.
i pride myself on being a stylistically diverse writer whose sense of production and arrangement doesn't get in the way of the tunes. and i am passionate about form and rhyme.
the song IS the thing. hope you enjoy mine...

Murphy is a great writer and wonderful instrumentalist. His melodies have real class...they are timeless, gettin' in my head and stayin'there.... same with his sense of harmony...and his storytelling and 'take on it' in general is always right-on/in the pocket. I'm a musician and songwriter myself so I admit I'm a bit biased to good stuff...and Murphy's stuff is GOOD
