Solid Smoothie For David Wells
David Wells is another in the crowded field of smooth jazz muted trumpet players, and he holds his own with the best of them. I have 5 CDs by him and all are worthwhile. On this 2011 release, Light, his fine playing shines throughout and all of the supporting players are tight as a drum as well. The tunes are so good on "Light" that David would have gotten the full five star treatment on this one except for the unnecessary inclusion of vocalists. On Hallelujah, I will Follow, My Father's Eys, and Move, the vocalists' function is little more than repeating the song title over and over. Nothing in smooth jazz could be more irritating, other than a full vocal track. On No Chains On Me, David has evidently signed Tarzan up for backing vocals. Good grief David, on the next release PLEASE leave the microphones turned off and just PLAY man.
