David “Ziggy” Walcott has won Jazz Artist of the Year for 2009 at the recently held Barbados Music Awards.
David “Ziggy” Walcott has been described by one critic as a remarkable musician who plays with great sensitivity, virtuoso technique and full command of the challenging instrument – the steel pan. He plays the tenor pan with unrivalled versatility.
At the tender age of 13, ‘Ziggy” as he is affectionately called, began playing with the Pan Revolution Steel Orchestra, and later became the arranger and Musical Director for the group.
However, David’s first taste of the big Pan stage came in 1995, when he performed on the Panorama stage with the Neal and Massey Trinidad All Stars. Four years later, he exploded onto the Barbadian music scene, when he accompanied local calypsonian “Adonijah” on the popular composition “Tenor Pan”, throughout Barbados’ premier festival - Crop Over .
Classics, Calypso, Soca, Jazz, R&B, David is at home with any genre and has preformed with the likes of Andy Narell, Zoe Rahman, Raf Robertson, AJA, Martin Taylor and Boo Hinkson. In addition, he has been featured at numerous pan festivals in Trinidad and Barbados, the Barbados Jazz Festival, the Barbados on the Water Festival (Canada), Beaches Jazz Festival (Canada), the St. Lucia Jazz Festival and the Holder’s Season (Barbados).
When not working on his music, David can be found moulding and grooming the young, up and coming players of Karmic Steel Orchestra (Barbados’ largest Steel Orchestra) in the rudiments of music and the steel pan.
In 2008 David released his debut album – Jambustin’. This scintillating album features all original compositions and transforms the sound of steel pan out of its traditional setting. The album fuses non- traditional Jazz and Caribbean elements, creating a new sound for his instrument.
Critics have described the album as one of the best Jazz albums to emerge out of the Caribbean in recent times.
David is still receiving rave reviews for his album.

The CD has been in my car's CD changer since January 2008 and isn't likely to be leaving it any time soon....... Waiting for the next album Ziggy.....!!!

This album was great. I am not an avid steelpan or jazz fan but I do enjoy the music. This album with its awesome combination of the two was well worth it. Truly addictive.
