Double Barrel Blues Band
"Bad, Bad Feeling"
Blues Lion Records

BY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO, © June 2009

The Double Barrel Blues Band bills themselves as an intense, exciting, rocking blues band that plays "In Your Face Blues". If that's true, then I'm sure to have a good, good feeling about "Bad, Bad Feeling" - the second release from this Syracuse, NY based band.

Members of Double Barrel include: Mark Cloutier on Lead Guitar & Vocals, John Hart on Vocals & Slide Guitar, Bill Satterly on Bass, and Garnett Grimm on Drums. The disc contains ten tracks of which six are band originals.

Everyone's partying hard on the opening track, that ya gotta wonder if the guys aren't just singing about it but sucking on some of that "Wine, Wine, Wine", as well. This is an all out jam on which the band immediately lives up to their self description. This one rocks! It's highlighted by intense rhythm from Bill and Garnett and lots of smokin' guitar leads by Mark. Real good stuff.

Things slow down a bit on the title track, an original called "Bad, Bad, Feeling". This is a real blues burner that has everyone in a mellow groove behind lots of smoking blues guitar highlights from Mark.

Somewhere between the opening track and here, the guys must have switched over to the hard stuff, because they now have the "Whiskey Blues". It's stuff like this that gives the Double Barrel Blues Band the right to say they're blues is in your face. It doesn't get any more straight up than this. John's vocals and Mark's guitar work on this track are what the blues is all about. Discs best, right here.

The name of this track - "B Flat Bone Boogie" - pretty much describes it. It's a smokin' instrumental that will have you boogieing down to your bones. If you can sit still through this one, then you gotta be in a body cast.

"Tin Pan Alley" is another slow and low down blues burner.....the kind of stuff I can listen to all night long. Although he's pretty hot on all tracks, this one may feature some of Mark's best guitar work. In addition to getting down in the alley on vocals, this one has John sounding very impressive on slide guitar as well.

Other tracks on "Bad, Bad Feeling" include: "Matchbox", "Voodoo Thing", "Restless One", "If You Find I'm Gone" and "Flipping And Flapping".

This is quite an impressive effort by the Double Barrel Blues Band, and I've got to admit that they've certainly lived up to their reputation. "Bad, Bad Feeling" was exciting, rocking and in your face kinda blues. Great work guys!

Check the guys out by going to www.doublebarrelbluesband.com. Feel free to tell them you stopped by to pick up a copy of their "Blewzz Approved" CD.

Song clips, CD reviews for Double Barrel Blues Band, JC Carroll, The Boomerangs

Categories: CD review, Song clip

I hope you get the chance to read my reviews of the new CDs from the Double Barrel Blues Band, JC Carroll and The Boomerangs in the Stars section of today's Post-Standard.

Here's my Post-Standard review of The Double Barrel Blues Band's "Bad Bad Feeling."

Listen to "Bad Bad Feeling" and you'll get the urge to sit in a bar and sweat with the Double Barrel Blues Band.

The Syracuse foursome lays down the sound with an obvious love for and equally apparent talent for blues the way it oughta be.

Guitarist Mark Cloutier can play it fast and hot or slow and tense.

Singer John Hart can add the grit or spread the honey.

Bassist Bill Satterly and drummer Garnett Grimm Sr. keep it real.

Satterly wrote the title cut, and Cloutier's guitar work will send shivers down your spine as Hart sings, "Sometimes it feels like a black cat crossed my path. Sometimes it feels like I got a target on my back."

Yet they also know that the blues can celebrate good times, too. In Cloutier's original "Flipping and Flapping," they see what can come from romancing their high-heeled baby. "I'm gonna buy you a shoe store, so you don't have to wear old shoes no more," Hart sings.

The well-picked covers start with a tasty "Wine Wine Wine" and finish with an anguished "Tin Pan Alley." "All the people down there, well they're living for the whiskey, wine and gin," Hart sings. Hoist one for the blues.

Catch a show: Double Barrel Blues Band plays at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Shifty's, 1401 Burnet Ave., Syracuse, and 9 p.m. Feb. 21 at Bear Bones BBQ, 83 Wall St., Auburn.

On the Internet: www.doublebarrelbluesband.com. The CD is available at cdbaby.com/cd/dbbluesband.

Here's my Post-Standard review of JC Carroll's "New English Blues."

British bluesman JC Carroll became Mark Cloutier's friend over the Internet. Carroll enlisted the man from East Syracuse to lay computer tracks for "New English Blues."

It's a good collection to listen to with your headphones as Carroll bares his vocal soul.

He delivers the title cut in four parts. When that's done, you know it's been a long road for the guy who first found U.K. fame decades ago. And you also are certain that he's enjoyed the journey.

Cloutier's guitar lines energize parts I, II and IV of the title song, and add zing to "I Ain't Gon be Yo B---- No More."

Carroll's voice of experience can take on Stones-like swagger, but he's also part soul man. When he sings the spare and pretty ballad "I Love My English Girls," you know he means it.

we played the new york state blues fest summer 2008!

tony dellario writer for blues scource magazine wrote this at last years new york state blues fest:::

Next up came one of the bigger highlights of the Festival for me. The Double Barrel Blues Band took to the Hanover Square Stage and Mark Cloutier (guitar) and the boys tore it up. Opening up with Albert Collin's " Frosty ", it was only uphill from there. These guys have been hard at work on the local scene, and based on the musicianship it would appear they all have been honing their skills! Keep up the great work guys, and thanks for keeping it real!

we are raw high powered blues--turn it up and enjoy!

mark cloutier has 18 years of experience playing blues in central new york..the former guitar man of dirty pool has played many major blues fests in past years-----notably, the new york state blues fest, chenango blues fest, massena springs blues bash, iron block harley davidson 105th anniversary party and blues in the bay-alex bay n.y.,etc.....mark has been recognized in central new york as best guitar player in central new york blues magazine 1997,and also was nominated 3 years for best blues band(dirty pool) by the syracuse sammy award committee..mark also recently had his picture on the front cover of "the vacationer" 1000 island magazine to promote 2008 blues in the bay!!!

john hart has performed throughout europe with various bands and has performed at the n.y.s blues fest, massena springs blues bash, blues in the bay, iron block harley davidson, watertown summer fest,etc...he has a very slick vocal style and performs with such ease and confidence!!his slide playing is top notch and really compliments mark's playing!!

Bill satterly has been playing with mark and garnet for 4 years as well with past experiences with dirty pool and elmo blake..bill really holds it down with that thumping 4 string bass and also sings writes a few tunes of his own as well..bill really understands the blues...he has also performed all the mentioned fests as noted above!!!

Garnett grimm holds it down nicely with 40 years of experience playing across new york and beyond...a great guy with booking experience and many contacts...he has shared the stage with mark and bill for 4 years now playing the same fests mentioned above!garnett is a seasoned pro with years and years of experience in various bands and booking..
DOUBLE BARREL BLUES BAND
DOUBLE WHAMMY BLUES - ROUGH AND TOUGH
Website Myspace VIDEO

wim--wave roofer -- a friend from soundclick forum translated the review for us--thanx a ton!!

Potent and viral Men with guitars strapped around their neck are always somehow impressive, even more when they act like a cohence act in a recording enviroment ! What you hear at this album of the DBBB from New York is rough edged and delicate in a row ! The band is build around Mark Cloutier, who's getting wide recoqnition for his fabulous guitar work amongst as well listeners and press ! When he still played in the Dirt Pool Band he made name as a 4 star guitarist ! Drummer Garnet Grimm has a long history in the New York club circuit and is solid as a rock !
In the DBBB Band his guitar is central point ! In "Tin Pan Alley" for example, he knows to impress with a driving dynamic performance without going over the top ! Same with John Harts slide playing, great feel in it ! The guitarists are that good, that it seems if they we're had class with B.B. King, Freddy King, Hubert Sumlin and Jimy Hendrix as teachers cq professors ! On the album It is mostly energetic potent blues, but there are a few laidback ones to !
The intimate instrumental "So Beautifull" would suit a baptization procedure in Church perfectly !

Except for all the borrowed and rearanged stuff, merely a combination of Traditional Blues, Blues Rock and Rockabilly,
which evolves in a typical 'Wang Dang Doodle" sound of the better side, there are 4 own compositions aboard !
Especially "Flippin & Flapping" is most enjoyable through the combination of neat guitars and the supportive bass of "Bolly Satterly" ! And "If You find I'm gone" has a "Lets go Jogging" vibe ! The DBBB is that kind of a band that you have to see on stage ! Satisfaction quaranteed....Same with the album....the cohence in song selection has a nice and neat swing and there's a great bluesy vibe from first to last song !

Marcie
