In Book Two the fallen angels debate their course and decide that corrupting Mankind is a safer and more worthwhile revenge than open war with Heaven. Chris’ voice was processed in several ways to differentiate the various characters. Gongs punctuate the action and indicate new speakers. Thunder is mentioned repeatedly in the text and is used throughout to supply the lowest frequencies. Bass Harmonica in large delay spaces set the tonal center and the cold strains of shortwave radio and chaotic bubbling feedback provide the tense mid frequencies. A shrill second harmonica part adds edge to the ambience.
In spite of the debate, it is God who is shown to be in control of the fate of both the angels and mankind, making a travesty of free will. For it is He who with perfect foreknowledge places the key to the Gates of Hell in the hands of Satan’s daughter, Sin. Thus, Satan is allowed to escape his prison and journey toward Earth to tempt Eve. Didgeridoo and psaltery combined with barking dogs help set the mood for the encounter with Sin and Death. The towering gates grind open as Sin inserts the key. The feedback and shortwave grow more prominent as Satan crosses the gulf of chaos where he stops briefly for directions from the rulers there. Angelic voices announce the glimpse of heaven’s spires as Satan approaches Earth to accomplish is mischief.
