Album Notes

Alchemy is the long awaited debut album from folk/roots songwriter Dave Calandra. Recorded over two years between New York and Sydney, it hints at influences like Nick Drake, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley while retaining a distinctively Australian sound.

Built around acoustic guitar and vocals, the organic production on the album creates continuity through the diverse collection of songs. Arrangements vary from solo-acoustic instrumentals to full-band acoustic rock, however there is a unifying warmth that ensures no song sounds out of place. Strong vocal melodies are supported by subtle finger-picking, while 'roomy' drum sounds embellish, rather than overpower the other instruments.

Dave Calandra is an innovative solo-acoustic performer from Sydney who has devoted the last ten years to honing his 'rootsy folk-rock' sound. From 2000 to 2004 Dave relocated to New York to share his music with a foreign audience and found a wealth of inspiration in the East Village music venues. Although the New York music scene was extremely competitive it was also rewarding to be surrounded by other artists constantly creating new works.

The songs on Alchemy were inspired by the musical transition Dave underwent during this relocation. They express instantly recognizable feelings of longing and yearning, coupled with an acceptance that it's OK if things don't quite turn out the way you had hoped or expected. The understated production only adds to the intimacy between you and the music. These are songs that you will want to listen to again and again, and share with your friends.

REVIEWS

Virtuoso finger-picking, catchy melodies, light touch
author: Geoff Baker
Well, I'll add another 5-star review here...This is a solid album from start to finish. The songs are well constructed and smoothly and subtly produced, with a diversity of arrangements that makes listening to it an enduring pleasure. Stand-outs for me are "New Moon" and "Alchemy," with their virtuoso fingerpicking, swelling harmonies and instantly classic melodies. I highly recommend this CD.

Dave Calandra's music is passionate, raw, honest and full of heart. The guitar is an extension of his deep Australian roots-his unique finger work puts him in a class all his own. Buy the CD, play it...laugh, cry and rejoice-through Dave the music will always live on!

Alchemy is an album that you need to hear twice. It sounds great the first time, but the truly remarkable fact about this album is the depth and complexity of the composition and that can only be truly appreciated with a number of tastings. Dave Calandra is an incredible guitarist, his open tuning and the sophistication of his finger work make the album a must have for guitar affectionadoes. The quality of production is absolutely top shelf, with a fine selection of well known U.S. and Australian artists offering support. Daves' voice has a quality that resonates somewhere slightly beyond reason and understanding, touching the listener in that special place that only truly great music can. But for me it is the lyrics that make Alchemy golden... (intended). The words in these songs capture an understanding that will resonate with every listener who has a grasp of their own humanity. Do yourself a favour, listen to some of these songs, at least twice. I'm thinking that we will be hearing them for a long time to come.

Alchemy -- A strong debut leaves this listener yearning for more ..
author: Randolph P. Turnbuckle
On first listen to 'Alchemy', I was taken by how often I could relate to the lyrical simplicity of this fresh young artist. So often I find indie releases crammed full of such personal journeys to the songwriter, that the listener ends up feeling isolated from any chance of relating personally to someone elses esoteric stories and anecdotes .. we struggle to relate .. not so with Dave Calandra's debut. This is a well crafted, well refined and beautifully executed record. Calandra tackles difficult subjects and dives deep to mine truths to present his audience, in an easy to listen to, easy to relate to, fun record with high production values. Great debut, really look forward to following Calandra's career and hope the next record comes sooner than later! Already he's worked with Jeff Buckley's drummer, but I'd say once this guy gets to the level where he can access a strong, experienced producer to introduce some alternate perspective to the overall tone and mix, he'll be world class. Get out and buy this one .. Three thumbs up!
