Sometimes in Jazz musicians come around who are going to do their thing, no matter how difficult it is for them, the people around them, or the people who listen to their music: Monk, Butch Morris, and I’ll add the notorious Daniel Carter to that list. Daniel’s “thing” lies in his method: no leaders and total freedom.
People love D.C. and his music so much that he’s gathered, for better or worse, a virtual army of collaborators who I’ll refer to as “the D.C. train.”
When people listen to Daniel’s music they are listening to his own personal symphony. Inside that symphony, there are bright moments where he’ll really be taking care of business—where, true to his nature, he’ll be seeing something that only he can see.
The duo setting with Daniel is the most challenging, and also the most fun…straight-up! Our duos are not unlike our conversations, and people who know D.C. know that his mind never turns off.
There IS new music here. The subject changes rapidly; yet throughout, the search for meaning is on—the search D.C. conducts twenty-four-seven: his mission in life. That meaning is discovered and felt more than once in this public discussion between two people who love making music.
Peace Out,
Matt Lavelle.
