We are DoomsDayDevice and DoomsDayDevice is a sci/fi hip-hop duo (or "apocalyptic terrorhop" as we prefer to call it) made up of brothers, Sputnik J. Frey and wz3d.
While lifelong fans of many different hiphop artists, our strongest influences have always been the creators of horror and science-fiction movie soundtracks and range from John Carpenter (Escape From New York) to Claudio Simonetti (Dawn Of The Dead),Fabio Frizzi (Zombie), Vangelis (Blade Runner) and Tangerine Dream (Miracle Mile).
The Device was born in early 2004, when Frey moved from Ft. Walton, Fl. to Lafayette, La. to begin work on the concept he and wz3d had been discussing over the past 2 years to create hip-hop music with the atmosphere of an apocalyptic b-movie. The album, "End Of The Beginning Of The End", soon followed.
("...Like the soundtrack to your brain, the score to that movie in your head, the circus to your freakish tendencies that permeates through your soul to the very place where music belongs —the place where ambition and creativity replace the rational and mundane."
Rachel Worthy - The Vermilion - Lafayette, La.)
While we were completely satisfied with the outcome of that first effort, it never felt like an accurate representation of what we are all about as our live show had naturally evolved in a different direction.
"Having only two members and two microphones leads to a more intense experience for the audience and DoomsdayDevice uses that to its full advantage, moving about the stage and into the crowd to really bring them into their rhymes and storytelling."
Anna Purdy - The Independent - Lafayette, La.
An opportunity led us to New Orleans in August of 2006, and we've been performing to record breaking crowds here ever since.*
We have played shows with The Chicharones, Hudson Falcons, Percee P., Mad Trucker, Arajay, Kid Midi, Damp Heat, Tony Skratchere, Ghostwriter, The Voodoo Organist, Mad Happy, and basically just anyone else who can understand why we would be doing what we do.
The new album, "Mostly Harmless", is the product of these last 2 years, tons of shows, inspirational new friends, and an obsession with creating the ultimate illustration of the philosophy and attitude of DoomsDayDevice. We feel we've come pretty danged close... hope you agree.
"My impression of these guys went through a transformation as I experienced them. They reject the norms of modern fashion, reject political correctness, and create their own musical genre."
Trucker Hater Magazine
Thank You For Paying Attention,
3d & Frey
* by "record breaking", we mean that there was one especially disastrous occasion when a temporal paradox caused there to actually be a negative amount of people in the audience.
