Album Notes

DPS(formerly the deadPoets) consists of MC's Jeff Moon and Chad Malik hailing from "The Queen City," Charlotte, NC. They have been making music as a collective since 1993 with a focus on creating hip-hop the only way they know how, honest and raw. It would be difficult to categorize them with just one style, underground, conscious, old school, etc. but their forte is without question telling stories and painting pictures with vivid verbal imagery. Essentially when you hear a DPS song you can close your eyes and the experience should be similar to going to see a movie, written and directed by them. This can be seen on their first E.P. release "Love Letters," which similar to the movie Memento moves in reverse order thematically chronicling the arc of everyday male/female relationships over the course of 8 tracks produced entirely by newcomer Buttaz. The E.P. examines everything from the initial euphoria (Date with Destiny) to infidelity (Young Missus pt. 1 & 2) failed reconciliation (Love Letters) to the dregs of domestic violence (F*cked up Now) until the story ends and the E.P. begins with the relationship nightmare of a woman calling the authorities (intro-911 Call). The hallmark of DPS' style is their ability to confront serious topics in a manner that is riveting and instantly relatable to the average person, but with an upbeat dexterous flow that often belies the gravity of the subject matter such as on the self-explanatory bonus song "Turnout." In case you were wondering DPS stands for Dirty Pretty Sh*t which represents the unique approach DPS brings to making music. Any fan of hip hop at it's best, with banging beats, tight flows, and thought provoking lyrics will enjoy DPS and their opus "Love Letters." So without further ado, you have now been invited to take a seat and enjoy the show. ******Please note that the remaining EP's are collectors editions because this will be the last release to bear the name "deadPoets," so make sure you buy now to keep a little piece of DPS history.

4.7 Ears!

The Random View New music and DVD’s available right now at Earwax. DJ Random Legend: 5 Ears = Classic, 4 Ears = Hot, 3 Ears = Not bad, 2 Ears = Aiight, 1 Ear = Wack…Don’t waste ya $$$!! Hip-Hop: This must be the conscious music week because another CD that jumped out of the pile was “Love Letters – The EP” by the deadPoets. I’ve gotta say that joint is SO REAL!! No posturing, no stories of blingin’, just the real isht that people go through and how men really feel in many of these situations. Ladies, here’s a chance for you to see inside the male psyche! Right off the rip, they hit you with an all-too-real sounding 911 call, that leads into ‘F*cked Up Now’ – a tale of how love can go from good to bad, but discussed from different angles. This is also seen on ‘Love Letters’, which features Angel and Monica, and is a portrait of a “Dear John” letter and the true reactions from both parties. There’s more drama on ‘Young Missus pt. 1’ (and pt. 2), but I especially like pt. 1 which is from the perspective of a dude caught in the middle after he gets with a woman that didn’t tell him that she had a man. I was also really diggin’ their use of strings on ‘Date with Destiny’ as well as the Tamika’s vocals. These cats are definitely showing that talent is coming from everywhere nowadays – Charlotte , NC ; STAND UP! (4.7 Ears) (Be sure to check out their MySpace site to see some of their video clips and hear a few of the songs.)

What up, DPS & lil ms."J" (aka ms. manage-her), Thought I would take time out (of civil rights) to give you a shout on the cd. Three words... I LOVE IT!! In todays' time some of US listen for tracks that disrespect! Me, I listen for tracks that touch the soul, like 2,6 & 7 on the "Love Letters" cd! Grand opening, Grand closing...my point! Keep producing music with LIFE, because you never know who's listening? Yo, Jeff/Chad, a "Date with Destiny" hit home...for real! I'm mailing a copy to AL, so stay in the lab and I'll stay on the streets! P.S. Oh yeah, Janalyn, I love my "dps" shirt, its' Mean! Shalom, John B.
