De Allen's roots go back to 1982 started between school buddies consisting of Billy D (guitars), Duane Vallejos (lead guitars), Jimmy (Bear) Larrea (drums) and Julian Forniss (bass). The early version of the band went through a revolving door of singerswhile a cover band and by 1985 had Billy D (bass), Duane Vallejos (guitars), Gabe Sinohui (guitars), Joe Lopez (drums) and various female temporary singers.
In the summer of 1986, Gabe and Duane were replaced by Nick Ruiz on guitar and Sean Dunbar ..boards. In December of 1986 De Allen took a break due to the holidays. Unfortunately this break was to be permanent for this line-up. Joe Lopez was killed tragically in a single car accident early morning of January 17, 1987.
Early 1987 saw the return of Duane and original De Allen drummer Jimmy (Bear) Larrea. Signing with manager Pat Schwarz and Blackhawk Entertainment, the band honed the sound. Opening an early 1988 show at Gazzari's to De Allen playing every club on the Sunset Strip by that Summer opening for bands such as Warrant, Guardian and Kik Tracee amongst others. Fall 1988 saw the release of the bands first effort "Lovers Lane" which was financed by the band and their loyal following. "Lover's Lane" was a 6 song EP on vinyl, now available with 4 bonus tracks on CD at http://deallen.com
Mid 1988 saw the inevitable change in singers after 3 years. De Allen continued to evolve as writers and the departure of Sean Dunber opening the door for Jim Gorski on keyboards and the amazing Susan Szatmari now on vocals we continued with our usual headlining shows throughout the strip and those that saw these performances were not only blown away with the revised line-up and new material but the grace, class and pure positive energy that came along with Susan Szatmari! If one of you reading this was privileged enough to have been at one of these performances you know that this is not an exaggeration, but an understatement!!!
De Allen has gone through many changes in line-up since 1990 but still continues to write, record and perform with the same spirit of heart that was born in a garage in La Puente, CA back in 1983, as well as a meeting that changed everyone's lives and a pact between Billy D, Duane Vallejos and Joe Lopez. While some of the De Allen family are sadly no longer here, their spirit lives on in our music and hearts. This 2002 male fronted version is yet another chapter in a band that has survived time! Billy D'Allyn on bass, guitars and keyboards / John Heald on drums, vocals / Nick Ruiz on guitars, vocals / Franky Dee on lead vocals.
