Bill Deasy : Good Day No Rain

He calls to mind Paul Westerberg and many of the finest rock songwriters who mix poetry and drunken bluster, yet somehow sound macho and sensitive at the same time. A cross between Matthew Sweet and Michael Penn-style smart pop and flat-out rock.

ARTIST BIO.:

Bill Deasy has established himself as one of the musical mainstays of his native Pittsburgh, but his music has also touched the hearts and imaginations of fans as far as Japan and Germany. He has played as an opening act for such artists as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Patty Griffin, Norah Jones and John Mellencamp.

If you ever attended a Pittsburgh Pirates or Steelers game, you may have seen him performing the National Anthem. His songs have been recorded by an interesting array of artists such as Martina McBride, Kim Richey, Howard Jones, Bijou Phillips, Michael Stanley and The Clarks. Deasy has also appeared, singing his own song "Good Things Are Happening," in a national television campaign for Good Morning America.

What ties all of these things together is, that at the center of everything, Bill Deasy is a songwriter with a lyrical and uniquely introspective point of view. "When I write songs," says Deasy, "I try to take my life experience and put it out there in a way that people can relate to. I feel like I've done my job if a song resonates with other people; if it connects with them in some way." Still, Deasy sounds just as comfortable singing a lighthearted pop song as he does a heart wrenching ballad or emotionally charged narrative.

The new album "Good Day No Rain" is truly a testament to this. From the beginning number, the lilting and ironic "I Want To Know" and all the way to the finale, the beautiful and powerful "The Gift of Seeing Through", the album takes us on a musical and lyrical journey, looking at relationships from many different angles and perspectives. Contemplation, reflection, evaluation, resignation and re-assurance - things that all of us go through. The album is a culmination of work done over the last year, which began by bringing him to New York to work with producer Gregg Wattenberg (Eve 6, Five For Fighting, Dishwalla). "Good Day No Rain" also represents a personal journey for former Gathering Field frontman Deasy, as he embarks into the world of solo recording artist.

All Music Guide Review 12/03

The former lead singer of Gathering Field, Pittsburgh native Bill Deasy has been through the major-label wringer, and has emerged with his second solo record, Good Day No Rain, on his own Bound to Be label. Sounding like a folkier Matthew Sweet, Deasy has a world-weary voice, and his lyrics have the feel of a wise and wounded romantic walking in a rainstorm. That's not bad, mind you, when you can do it as well as this guy does. With huge hooks, songs like "It's All Right There," the orchestrated "Blue Sky Grey," and the funky shuffle of "In My Head" all demonstrate the hand of a skillful writer adept at hitching a sincere, soul-searching tone to easily infectious melodies. Sensitive singer/songwriters are a dime a dozen, but really good ones are a rarity. Bill Deasy is the real deal. In a perfect world, you'd already know this.

If only the labels would listen!!!!!

I own many of Bill Deasy's CD's, but this is by far his greatest accomplishment. I can listen to this over and over again without ever getting tired of the songs. Keep it up Bill you are an awesome singer with such an extrodinary voice. Can't wait to get "Thomas Jefferson's Aeroplane, The Invisible Ocean". I am sure I will not be disappointed. Thanks Bill for sharing your talent with all of us. Keep it up.

Absolute Classic!!!
author: neil (Blackpool, UK)
This has lived in my CD multi-changer since it's release... so as you can tell i'm not really one for writing reviews, but this is an absolute classic - right up there with The Gathering Field's Lost In America. Favourite tracks: all of them, they are all great. The album even ends strongly, and the 7min 45sec closing track, The Gift of Seeing Through, is amazing. On this album Bill Deasy proves he is one of the best singer-songwriters in America. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. Buy this. You won't regret it. (...and then go & check out Michael McDermott...)

Okay, so I'm a few years late writing this review but better late than never! Got Bill's new one the other day and wound up having a Deasy listening marathon. Newest one The Miles is pretty good and so is Chasing Down A Spark but this one is still my favorite. 4 years later and it sounds like it could have come out in 2007. Good Day No Rain is a great addition to your Deasy or Gathering Field collection and if you've never heard him, this record is a good place to start finding out what you have been missing.

Bill's song writing seems to get better and better, if that is possible. While listeneing to his music, you hear a song and think, wow, this is a great song, and then the next one is even better. Thats how this cd is. It's terrific!! Thanks Bill!!!
