These songs are from the heart and no place else. If you are listening you will feel them from your core. Debbie writes her tunes with a raw innocence that is easy to relate to by anyone who has experienced the loss or gain of love. She says she writes like this because "this is the only way I know how to express myself. I have a hard time verbalizing without music. It is and always will be my heart and my art. I try to bring the truth of my emotions to the surface and sometimes it is painful for me and I think, uh oh, maybe I'm exposing myself too much." Debbie has been inspired over the years by so many great musicians and especially likes to honor artists with a touch of their flavor in her songs. For instance in Pity Party, the wild and crazy tune was inspired by Rufus Wainwright simply because Debbie admired his uninhibited raucous style when she saw him at The Tabernacle in Atlanta the night before she wrote it. And midway into the song, if you listen to the line "I don't need to ponder everything you do..." you can hear a shout out to Carly Simon when Debbie dives to the lowest note in her vocal range. In her song Pretty Is As Pretty Does Debbie was listening to and feeling the vibe of Eric Clapton and strove to pull some of Eric's stylistic features into the song. The song Rainin' was written when Debbie first moved back to Atlanta and was listening to Miles Davis and reading the biography Q by Quincy Jones and also some excerpts about Joni Mitchell and her relationship to Mingus. So many influences and reasons to write great songs...With over 400 songs under her belt Debbie considers herself quite a prolific songwriter and expects to create many more fabulous cds. Stay tuned!
