Album Notes

Deborah Holland returns with her long-awaited fourth solo album, BAD GIRL ONCE…. Its title track, a buoyant ode to wild days gone by, sets the stage for an album that effortlessly crosses genres but still showcases her as a “lyrical ironist to match Warren Zevon.” (R. Deitz, Sing Out! magazine) The album’s mix of samples and loops with acoustic instruments blends styles as diverse as folk, rock, blues, jazz, and electronica—all strikingly unified by Deborah’s voice.

Deborah’s tremendous singing and songwriting talents were first introduced via two critically acclaimed albums with the trio Animal Logic (rounded out by Stewart Copeland [Police] and jazz great Stanley Clarke). Subsequent duets with Jackson Browne and Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) as well as her first two solo releases broadened her audience and found her venturing into the acoustic genre. THE BOOK OF SURVIVAL, Holland’s third solo release, was praised by diverse media such as the LA Weekly and Dirty Linen and received radio play on WXPN, WUMB, Mountain Stage, WDET, WFHP, and others.

BAD GIRL ONCE is the first release from the newly-formed independent label, RageOn Records. The album’s roster of Deborah-penned songs is rounded out by two covers, Beach Boys classic “Sloop John B” and Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times (Come Again No More),” traditional songs which are recharged here by Deborah’s modern loop-sample arrangements. Additionally, the track “On My Way” was co-written with Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman.

Deborah will be touring nationally beginning in Fall 2006.

“As a wordsmith, Deborah Holland concerns herself with the balance between heart and mind. As an artist, she makes the balance seem effortless.”
--Pamela Murray Winters, Dirty Linen magazine

A very solid piece of work!

I'm extremely impressed! "Bad Girl Once" puts it all together. Fine songwriting that spans several musical genres. Insightful and witty lyrics that make you wish you knew her on a personal level. Skilled, tasteful musicianship that makes each song click. Anchoring it all are Deborah's splendid vocals. This disc demonstrates she's as fine a female vocalist as there is. I can't get her music out of my head. This CD is superb!

Growing older doesn’t necessarily mean losing your rebellious edge—or sense of humor. Los Angeles singer/songwriter Deborah Holland makes this case quite convincingly throughout her new release, the wonderful, aptly titled Bad Girl Once . . . Soccer Mom Now. [Her} style and delivery reminds me of a female Loudon Wainwright III. Soccer mom now? Hardly.

Dear diary, I have a few songs to sing you....

Almost like a musical diary entry, this batch of songs from Deborah seems more personal than commercial. As always, it's a pleasure to hear that crystal clear voice on any material, her jazz inflections shining through once again. One of those artists you could listen to singing the phone book.
