Album Notes

Talk about troupers, Deena Miller is without a doubt living proof that persistence is the key to success. Deena has been living full out, committed to the process of being a performing singer songwriter without focusing on recognition and rewards. Over the last decade, she's been pouring out her heart and conquering fans with a contagiously optimistic "feel good about yourself "attitude. Her strength comes through her powerful voice carrying messages from her soul and delivering a unique experience...This girl does NOT need a microphone!
Gearing up for a 2002 release of her debut album, "A THOUSAND WORDS" on "FORE REEL" records, Deena follows in the footsteps of her musical parents, Jimmy Miller the legendary producer (ROLLING STONES, TRAFFIC, BLIND FAITH) and Gayle Shepherd, member of the singing group "THE SHEPHERD
SISTERS" (who had the million selling single"ALONE" in 1956). Her mom and dad inspired her to appreciate the rawness and truth in music and by the age of eight, Deena started singing, writing and playing the guitar.
Although she has recorded and performed her own material over the years and even managed to fit in a world tour with Rock legend "MEATLOAF" as his featured vocalist, listeners have former A&M A&R man Hernando Courtright and his wife, former Epic A&R Doreen Reilly Courtright to thank for releasing this excellent collection on their Fore Reel imprint. It is not hyperbole to say that this is quite simply an amazing record from start to finish. "A Million Voices" is the first track on a CD entitled A Thousand Words, and it sounds very much like the updated Jefferson Starship, a folky anthem that would fit well on the Starship's Deep Space/Virgin Sky disc. "Broken Angel" segues nicely; its hook and smart middle eight play like a modern day Joni Mitchell.
Deena controls the lyrics with her powerful and pretty voice, but it is the production work that is really impressive. Her dad was signed to Colgems/CBS at 19 years of age as a vocalist before he went on to produce George Clinton, Traffic, and the Rolling Stones. That his daughter has created such an incredible set of sounds on her own says something about carrying the tradition forward. Deena draws from many different pop elements, and has the voice, the charm, the expression, and the heritage. She tells her ancestors to "come through my voice," and this Miller production is, indeed, a great vehicle for them to do that with.
Deena is currently promoting her CD, and stays busy as the director/host of CHICK SINGER NIGHT
( http:www.chicksingernight.com) a monthly
New York City showcase for talented singer songwriters.
Deena's music is also featured in the non for profit CD "IT"S ABOUT EVE"
( http://www.itsabouteve.org) featuring Joan Jett, raising money for breast cancer research.

REVIEWS

Swept away by this album
author: Racquel
The voice on this woman defies description. It's Joni Mitchell gorgeous with all the cool of Sheryl Crow, the songs on this album are incredible and timeless. "Carry on " leads the way on the amazingly addictive scale... solid songwriting. We all have the woman in these songs, in us. That is why this album works. It is an intuitive vision of a growth journey so spot on, it is wonderful music, a wonderful listen, a gorgeous daydream. Like her father's era...Deena put out an ALBUM, the tracks together tell a story. The scope on "A Thousand Words" is sweeping and all things earthy and ancient are framed by a classic guitar driven rock sensibility. It's gorgeous.

Deena Miller is one of a kind. Not only does she come with an amazing range but she proves she's a pro by knowing when to pull back and not be afraid of her softer more intimate tones. Her lyrics are moving and heartfelt. I found myself singing her tunes from the moment i listened. Simply beautiful!

She Blows Me Away

I am always on the lookout for new female artists. I saw Deena Miller interviewed, heard some of her just acustic with a few lines from one of the songs on this CD. I had to have the CD so I went to the web page she had given on the interview. One of my new favorite CD's. She has a strong voice. She's new to me and she sounds so unprosessed. She isn't assembly line. My taste in music runs to female artists, perhaps because I'm female, but it runs from alternative to soul to folk to county to rock to pop, you name it. I don't know where I'd put Deena's music, and that's a good thing. She is her own genre. Buy the CD. You won't be sorry, and you'll enjoy her tremendously.
