Album Notes

"Ram is certainly an accomplished player, displaying a technical mastery reminiscent of his famous teacher's….Ram's playing is mysterious and haunting. Ram proves on this recording that he's likely to become a central figure in a new generation of Indian musicians."
Gerry Farrell, Songlines, Nov./Dec. 2002

Indian classical music is based on the exploration and improvisation of two musical entities (melody and rhythm) within very strict guidelines.

As Pandit Ravi Shankar said "It takes many years to fly freely (improvise) while still in the cage (the rules of the raga".

Melody is governed by the Raga system while rhythm is governed by the Tala system.

Deepak Ram is a delightful and captivating performer, with impressive technical mastery.

He has performed throughout the United States, South Africa and Europe and is a senior student of Bansuri flute master Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.

In 2000, Ram was awarded Best Instrumental Album at the South African Music Awards 2000 for his album Searching for Satyam.

On this recording, Deepak Ram is accompanied by tabla master Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.
