The Deep Roots project features some of Portland, Oregon's finest musicians who, for the seventh year in a row, have teamed up with a group of high school students to put out a powerful 21 song CD.

In order to create this compilation, titled "Deep Roots 7," the song writers visited a high school classroom and put together a writing workshop for the students, sharing the tricks of their trade. Then the students tried their own hand at lyric writing. Eventually, the musicians took the young writers' words and turned them into songs.

The high-schoolers not only wrote the lyrics, but helped design the CD cover, took photographs, wrote press-releases, maintained an awesome web site (deeproots.com), and put together a sixth annual release concert.

The music is great, and all proceeds from the CDs' sale go back into the project's production costs. Along the way, students learn that hard work and perseverance pay off, and also discover that their voices are powerful and their ideas, worthwhile.

That all adds up to make this project one of the coolest around. Wanna help? All you have to do is buy a great CD at a bargain price. Enjoy.

This is a great project that was successfully done. The idea is a brainstorm that called for a lot of work, collaboration of talents, and entrepreneurship. Everyone wins -- especially the listeners. The bands did an very good jobs with the student lyrics.
